East Coast DISers

We have "evacuation remorse" from Floyd years ago. Never again will I leave for a hurricane.

I don't think we'll have issues from Earl anyway, but we are prepared for all sorts of hurricane eventualities: plenty of food, water, batteries, cash, ammo (jk, sorta ;)), propane for the camp stove, etc. We do regular hurricane prep on our property, making sure there are no trees that could reach the roof if they fell, picking up any branches and pinecones that could become projectiles. When we built the house, we made sure everything we used was rated to a category 5 storm. Reinforced garage door, reinforced windows, etc. We've been through several 'canes in this house and have the batten-down-the-hatches routine down to just over an hour.

We will be staying out of the water this weekend - rip currents are no joke.

Good luck to everyone who might be affected!

Here in Newport we are under a tropical storm watch. Cruise ships have started canceling their stops in Newport (or at least their land excursions) for Saturday. I am in a high evacuation area so I am watching pretty closely.

We are prepared for it, plenty of food and supplies. Planning on a quite weekend at home. Was going to invite friends over for a bbq, changed my mind, I have to much to do to get ready for Disney trip. Look forward to this weekend. hope the storm is not to bad.

I'm monitoring but not concerned. I am going around my property and securing everything. I just told my kids to get their surfboards and stuff bungie'd down.
We keep talking about getting a generator and might do it. I need it for my business anyway.

Same here. I haven't taken any precautions. I just picked stuff up around the yard and put the "loose" things in the shed.

I'm keeping my eyes on it as well. After we lost power for 2 1/2 days back in March (the most we've ever been without power in my life!)

What about in 1985 when Gloria hit? I think we were without power for about a week that year. DH likes to laugh now when he thinks back to that time b/c his mother made him go out in it with the video camera :rotfl: DH was 15 and those video cameras back then were big compared to today's cameras.

We're on vacation in OCNJ at the moment, I think the storm will stay well off the coast but we're feeling some wind gusts already. The weather this week has been great so no complaints from me. Stay safe everyone!

We were lucky then--lost it for a few hours, but that was it! Parts of Massapequa were out of luck--I know they let people shower at the high schools.

and I remember those big video cameras! My dad got one in 1991--when my nephews were born. :lmao:

Wow that was a short time to lose power! The one thing I was very thankful for was that my parent's had a gas stove so we could still cook.

DH grew up with an electric stove. That's what we have now since we are living with DFIL. So if we do lose power due to Earl, we are out of luck for cooking. Although we could take a 2 minute drive to my mom's and cook there since she still has a gas stove :rolleyes1

On the phone with Jetblue now, trying to change a flight out of JFK for tomorrow morning. Considering the NY Airports can barely function in good weather, I'd rather get out ahead of the storm than behind it on Saturday.
