East Coast DISers

Yeah I am pretty much stalking that website HAHA

There are a few tracks that have it coming fairly close to Newport. Since the boats do not dock but instead anchor further out and then boat them in I am curious if the increased waves will limit the land excursions.

I am in a flood plain that results in evacuation for any category hurricane that gets close enough so I am hoping it stays far enough out to see to avoid evacuations but close enough for some sort of fun weather (I love hurricanes lol)

Thank you for this thread, actually. You made me give this more thought than I normally would and I realized, my client has a massive conversion scheduled for this weekend! :scared1: They're based in Boston, with some people coming into their Boston, Providence and Portland offices. We have folks scheduled to come in here, as well. Looks like I might want to put on my Business Continuity Coordinator hat today just on the chance nobody can get in. I still think the chance is slight, but I probably should have a plan in place just in case.

Well, this could add an interesting twist to an already stressful week.

Not coming my direction but as a Florida girl, I'm always ready. DH and I have a box of nonperishable items, flashlights, batteries, cases of water, and extra medicine all set and ready to go. We also have an overnight bag packed for each of us with enough clothes to last a couple of days so we can leave quickly and hopefully before the rush. Also, we have our cat carriers out and in an easily accessible place.
I always meant to do all that. DH will be out of town; maybe I'll make that my project, whether we're going to get hit or not.

I'm watching it closely. I'll probably move our boat from the dock out to the mooring on Friday so as to avoid all of the banging around it could potentially get at the dock... I hope it stays east and we only get a brush.

The storm itself wont be a problem, but the tidal surge that comes with it is gonna cause problems for some unsuspecting boat owners who arent tied up properly. Also, most boat insurance wont cover damage caused by a 'named' storm.

I am supposed to be flying out of JFK on Saturday to visit my mother in Florida. Plan B is that I change my flight to Friday. It's a little too early to tell right now.

We both knew there was a chance that there might be a hurricane when I booked my flight. However, we thought it would be in Florida!

I'm keeping an eye on things, but so far it looks like it is going to skirt the coast. After seeing the damage that Isabelle caused on our area several years ago, I would evacuate my family in a heartbeat if it looked like anything bigger than a Cat 1 was going to hit nearby. When you have young kids, you can't afford to take any chances.

We keep a generator and supplies handy for when the smaller storms hit in case there are power outages. With this storm, I think it is much more likely that the northeastern coastal states will be hit.

The most that would happen here is wind and heavy rain (same as Wilma back in 2005).. Only problem is it would ruin the huge bon fires around the lake Sunday night - and the huge all day picnic on Sunday as well.. Monday (Labor Day) is when most folks pull their boats out of the lake, pack up their belongings, and close down their places till next season.. Not fun doing all of that in the wind and rain, but we're much safer than folks on the coast..

Good luck to everyone in the coastal areas..:goodvibes With any luck, Earl will veer off and all will be well..:thumbsup2

We got gas for the generator and the vehicles, but frankly, we're far enough inland that I think we'll be fine.

I am hoping it comes in farther than they predict and take down my neighbors ugly tree. That sucker has withstood everything over the years and it is the ugliest bare pine needle, pine cone, and sticky sap dropping tree I have ever seen. it is so crooked that it hangs over my yard more than in their yard and I wind up cleaning up after it every spring and fall.
It withstood the tornado winds that ripped apart my yard a few months ago while I sat at the window praying for it to topple. If it fell on my trampoline, pool or garage I wouldn't even mind.

We are far enough inland too but we have a house on Emeral Isle, NC. Worried about that a little. This is the first labor day in a while that we don't have plans to head down b/c of football games this Sat. I guess we wouldn't be going anyway. Isabel was a bear so I am hoping Earl won't be as bad.

We're monitoring with a very watchful eye, as we planning on driving down to central N.C. for a 4 day week-end to visit our kids :goodvibes. I hope and pray it's not too bad for the coast areas, hopefully everyone prepares just in case and stays safe.

I have another word for Isabel, but I can't write it. Isabel rocked my world and not in a good way.

Because of what happened, hurricanes, just the word freaks me out. I am in Newport News Va and even though it doesn't look like a direct hit, we may get heavy rains and some fast wind.

The trampoline is coming down tomorrow, don't want it to possibly ram into the house or the neighbors, as well as everything that is stored outside is coming in.

And DD and I are just going to stay someplace else, we have a lot of trees around us that aren't ours and I can't deal with that again.

I'm just keeping an eye on the projected path. We have plans on going to get DS8 dress shoes for school on Saturday. School starts for him next Wednesday. I would be happy if it completely misses us or dies down considerably in wind strength.

I'm keeping my eyes on it as well. After we lost power for 2 1/2 days back in March (the most we've ever been without power in my life!) I've had flashlights, batteries, etc. ready. I'll make sure cell phones are charged, that we have bottled water on hand, and we should be OK>

I'd rather be prepared & have nothing happen, than think "it won't hit here" or "it's just hype".

Even though it doesn't look like it will make a direct hit, it appears it will track close enough to cause tropical storm conditions and if it is still category 2 or 3 when it passes (it is showing it won't drop to 1 until it passes southern New England but of course this probably will change) then it could cause category 1 conditions.
Regardless of whether the media is overhyping this it is still something to pay attention to if you want to be safe.

Always remember you need to look at the cone, not the actual track.
Remember what happened with Hurricane Charley and Florida. At the last "minute" it made a jog slammed into an area not expecting to get hit that bad.

If Earl jogs to the west it could get dicey.

Be safe everyone :goodvibes

I'm in Chesapeake, and all I hear about Earl is "Maybe" we'll get some rain. Possible showers is as close to anything weatherwise that I've heard. DH was here for Isabel as that was 2 weeks before our wedding. I really don't think it'll be bad at all and I have been checking the weather channel a few times a day. If it gets worse we'll decide if we need to go somewhere. But right now, I'm just looking at it as a rainy day, not the Mass evacuation event that seems to be bandying about right now.

I'm monitoring but not concerned. I am going around my property and securing everything. I just told my kids to get their surfboards and stuff bungie'd down.
We keep talking about getting a generator and might do it. I need it for my business anyway.

I am truly a dork. My DD's friend's grandparents are currently in Outer banks and she was telling me about strong rain and wind, she meant for down there, but I misunderstood thinking it was for here. I watched Wavy news tonight and it does seem to be further off the coast then before, which is a good thing. I want nothing to do with a hurricane.

But if it were closer, I would be gone. Isabel was a wake up call of sorts. The HRBT storm gates/ door didnt work properly. People waiting in line for ice. The Red Cross setting up across the street from where I live.

People think if it's not a direct hit, no worries, but if you are on the East side of a hurricane, that is a dangerous section as well.

Nope, the way the coast goes in at Georgia, it's not real likely one will get to us. It has happened, but most of them just skirt right on by. My DMom use to run to Atlanta every time there was any thought of a storm. She was sooo mad at me because I had a job and wouldn't go too.:)
