Ants are crazy!! They have found a way off our back deck and into our kitchen! It's disgusting!! Until we get the exterminator out here...and caulk where we see their entrance, and killing them with passion as they arrive, what else can we do to detour them?!?!?!!?

BTW...no, our kitchen is not nasty. It's very clean :upsidedow

Terro Ant syrup. Best stuff on the planet. They come in droves initially, they eat and then bring some back to kill the rest of the nest. Works like a charm. Get the syrup, not the traps. Some supermarkets carry it, most hardware stores do.

Home Depot and Lowes both carry it. It does work well, but it can be a little disgusting. Many ants will drown in the stuff. Many more will randomly die all over the place and need to be cleaned up. Also, depending on what your neighbors do, you will probably have to use it a number of times each season.

Terro, terro, terro!

You will be tempted to kill the trailing ants but don't. They MUST eat it and take it back to the queen to kill the nest.

This stuff is the BEST.

I got the traps and the ants were gone that VERY day. Like I put the traps out, went to bed, and never saw an ant again. At all. Got it in the grocery store.

Another vote for Terro. The ant traps they just walk around, but Terro they dive right in and then they are gone.

I am glad you posted this because I was going to post the same thing... I Have ants that are coming the backdoor and going to the cat food, I hate it so much... so if you don't mind I am going to tag a long with you to hopefully find an answer

Sorry can I ask if the Terro stuff is ok with animals around, i.e. cats, dogs..like in case they eat it

Google is your friend:

TERRO® Liquid Ant Bait is a sweet food based product similar to pancake
syrup combined with Borax. Borax is a mineral that is mined in the desert
in California and is a common active ingredient that is used in soap
products such as 20 Mule Team Borax.

The product kills ants but will not harm people or pets. If you spill some
on your skin there will be no reaction at all. Simply wash with warm water.

Pets occasionally find the Terro and eat it. Our advice when this happens
is to do nothing at all. The product is not toxic enough to cause a problem
and the pet will be just fine.

We spray ant spray around the baseboards when we see ants. One of the kids dropped a piece of candy in the kitchen, ants found that and the dog food-they were EVERYWHERE. I sprayed, they were gone, haven't seen any ants in months. The spray we use also works great on those asian beetles (the ones that look like lady bugs). We spray down the side of the house where we see them and they are gone for the season.

I don't know the name of the spray but it comes in a red bottle and we got it at the hardware store.

TRUE, however, although Terro is GREAT on sweet ants, it doesn't work at all on others. We wiped out all of our sweet ants early in the summer with Terro which worked like a charm on those, but now we have these really small ants, that act like they don't want anything, but are just everywhere, can't get rid of them. They don't respond to Terro at all unfortunately. But as Tinijocaro said, if they are sweet ants, Terro will wipe them out in a few days.

Terro is funny because it will kill some of the ants and the other's will just climb over their dead backs to get at the liquid. Ants are stuuuupid. :rotfl2:

Ok, I am easily amused.

I used it last year and it worked. This year, not so much. I wonder if I have a different kind of ant this time around. :confused3

Best way to get rid of ants is to find the trails that are leading to your house from the yard, and spray there, or put Ajax, etc., to stop those trails. We use malathion. Of course, over time, the stuff wears off & the ants will try again (during "ant season") so when you see them show up again treat the area. We used to use Terro when I was growing up, but year after year we'd have a huge problem. Ever since I started treating the ant trails I don't have that issue anymore.

Good luck.

We had some sort of ant when we had a cat and I was pregnant, and I didn't want anything poisonous to get rid of them.

We found some sort of cinnamon powder (made for the anti-ant purpose) at Home Depot. Put it down around where you see that they are coming in, and it does something to them...took a few days, but then they just disappeared, and the powder was easy to just vacuum up.

Does the trick alright. Great stuff.

If you want easy, non-chemical then get an anteater as a pet. Sorry I couldn't help myself.

I've used straight 20 mule team. I had an infestation and watched them until I found out where they where coming in from and the trail they where using. I put the 20 mule right in their trail so they had to walk thru it. They got it on their body and carried it back to the nest. Within a week if not sooner they where gone.

Same can be used for cockroaches. My neighbor used it for that.
