So as I'm sure you have heard " Earth Hour 2009" is this Saturday. The idea is that people and companies are to turn off all their lights at 8:30 pm. I guess this is to bring awareness to energy conservation and the such....I don't belive in it I think its a crock.

The question is will WDW or D Land do it. They have stressed their "greeness" quite a bit over the years. Recycling cans, running the trains and boats on bio diesel....

From what my grandmother told me back in the day was when NYC had a major blackout one winter night there was a huge baby boom in 9mos....

For safety and customer happiness I would seriously doubt it. I mean if you paid your full ticket price to go to the parks would you be really happy if you had to sit/stand in the dark for an hour at the parks?

Yes, I think it would be awesome for them to come up with a cool alternative to make a point and to help, but jumping in on this might make a very, very long line at City Hall to make compliants no matter how well meaning Disney might want to be.

Agreed. They would probably have to close lines and hour or two before the time and then they'd still risk having people stuck on those rides when they shut the power down. All of the restaurants, stores and bathrooms would also have to be closed, meaning that the park would be more or less completely closed down for an hour. Not to mention, people would get freaked out if they didn't know exactly what was going on, especially children.

Just playing devils advocate, do you then think they are only "green" when they can make money off of it? For example, selling recyclables and using old fry oil for fuel (saving them from buying diesel)....

No way would they do it. They would need to shut down the entire park early for that, and they only do that for private parties.

disney is already planting a tree for every ticket bought to the new earth movie opening weekend thats there contrubaltion(lol)

I was just about to say this. That's a huge contribution. It will definitely help on their part. I mean they can well afford to do it, and I am sure were kinda pressured to play a part.

Not everything makes them money on the front, like having all the new bags being more enviromentally friendly. But since more people care it does reflect well on the company and many of us are more likely going to give money to companies that seem to care.

I think its one of the few consumer trends that is great to see! Personally I don't care "why" but care more that some big companies are trying to do good things!!

Money from all wishing wells and fountains as well as all cans collected in the recycle containers are donated to charity.

Earth Day is a great idea but for safety reasons cannot be done but they could maybe have the Earth Day that has been around for decades and do something special that day.

There is no way DL will participate in this. This Earth Hour thing is more of a stunt that anything that would actually help the planet. I think DL is smart enough to realize that and would rather participate in real conservation programs like the plant a tree initiative mentioned in this thread.

Not to mention the fact it will take more energy to shut everything down for an hour and then restart it!

Im sorry Im not sure I quite understand what you think is a crock? The conserving the enviorment for future generations rather then destroy it or the Earth hour thing? I doubt Disney will participate since it would use more energy then it would conserve to shut it down and start it back up not to mention if its dark in the parks it would be dangerous to have that many people running around in the dark and I doubt people already in line wouldnt apreciate it much. However Im glad Disney has gone pretty Green I think every little drop in the bucket counts IMO.

Edit: Having reread this I think it came out meaner then I had intended. I simply that ment yes earth hour is a little pointless and is pretty much just to raise awareness then to actually have any impact on the problem. However if going green is what you felt was a crock it makes me a little sad. Sorry if I came off a little mean.
