Hi,
Just wanted to share...yesterday my 15 year old autistic DS and I were getting ready to leave the house...I told him to get himself a soda or water and get in the car...I followed a couple minutes later. He'd gotten a soda for me and put it in my cup holder ! He knows I never leave the house w/o a diet Coke...I had one in my purse but I thanked him profusely and he could tell I was thrilled. I think it is the hyperbarics...another example...tacky, I know, but...I was scheduled to have some cosmetic surgery a couple weeks ago...well the day before DS said something which made me realize that he was worried about me...once I explained that I wasn't sick, was just having surgery to look pretty he was fine...and other than telling me to take my bandages off he let me rest for three days. This was a huge change. A few years ago I had my veins stripped and came home right after...I was supposed to stay overnight at least but threw a tantrum because I knew DS would be upset if I was gone overnight...anyway, that time there was no rest for me...he was right there, jumping on the bed...I think any of us on this board know how that goes...but now, for the first time in 15 years...I can be sick.

Really sweet Mother's Day story. Thank for sharing and :grouphug: for all moms and kids.

I'm so happy for you both! Sounds like he made a real breakthrough! Empathy is such an important concept and so difficult for autistic kids to grasp! :goodvibes

Don't get sick now that you can, though!!!

but really - EXCELLENT news!

Thanks for all the understanding replies. DS hasn't shown empathy since he was 18 months old and pushed me away from my parent's fireplace. We always told him to stay away, he could get hurt, and he was very careful...but he obviously thought I needed to be careful too, at that time. I've been bragging to everyone I know, but I don't think most people really get it.
