We checked in at OKW on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and our Grand Villa was ready! I was apprehensive when the CM told me it was a handicapped GV in building 63, because of all the discussion here on the board about handicapped rooms and the lack of bathrubs in those rooms. I asked if there would be bathtubs in any of the rooms, as we had three small children with us who do not take showers. I knew we could use the big tub in the master bedroom if we had to, but it's kind of hard to manage a 10-month-old in the big whirlpool tub. The CM said that all of the rooms would have the handicapped showers, even the upstairs bedrooms. This surprised me, as I would have thought that the only changes would be on the first floor. He said he had one other GV available but it would not be ready until later in the day. We did accept the handicapped GV as the location was wonderful and it was ready for us to move in right away -- I figured we'd find a way to work out the bathtub situation without too much problem. The CM seemed very grateful that we took it -- I think it really must be hard for them to get people to take the handicapped rooms.
If anyone else is ever apprehensive about the handicapped GV, don't be. It was wonderful. We had an elevator right outside our room, which really helped with the groceries and luggage.
The upstairs bedrooms were set up just as in the other GV's, even though the CM thought they weren't. So we had plenty of bathtubs for the kids. The only difference in the bathrooms was in the one in the master bedroom. The only other differences were that the kitchen sink was lower and did not have storage underneath, which was no problem at all, and we had a side-by-side refrigerator instead of the standard (with crushed ice and water in the door, which my daughter loved). Also the washer was one of those that opens from the front instead of the top. It was very, very quiet and I wish I had one at home!
I just wanted to report this in case any of you are hesitant to accept the handicapped GV. It is wonderful. I would never request it, of course, as it should always be available first for those who really need it, and think it's wonderful that they now have some GV's that are handicapped accessible -- but I would certainly be happy to have it again if it were offered to us.
