Due to a loooonnnngg commute, I use my iPod over 4 hours a day, every day.

I'm not particularly hard on my earphones (or so I thought...), and have had the same iPod for nearly 4 years. I just can't seem to stop earbuds from dying on me. The last set was a relatively cheap Skullcandy ($17 from Target), which died over the weekend after 2 months.

So I've just paid another $5.99 for cheapy Maxell earbuds and, anticipating their demise, hope to find a pair that might last longer than 3-6 months. I'm planning to store this pair in a tin to help protect them when not in use, but am wondering if anyone might have some experience?

Your problem is that you are buying CHEAP earbuds. Invest in a quality pair and they will last. FWIW, I own the $17.99 skull candy ones and I HATE them. Everyone raved about how great they were and I found the sound to be poor (little to no bass/low end) and you can hear every bump the wires make. We are ordering another pair of Phillips surround sound buds (best sound quality I've heard yet). My old pair didn't die...I killed them. They got caught on something and broke.

There are high quality earbuds but they'll run closer to $100+. If you want some moderate headphones(the kind that fit over your ears) try the Koss Porta Pro headphones. They are about $30 but the sound is terrific. Plus they have a lifetime guarantee--if they break you send them in with something like $7 handling and they'll fix them or replace them. You can get them on Amazon.:)

I have a pair of Klipsch S4 earbuds and LOVE THEM. They ran me something like $79 at Best Buy and, so far, have been the best ones I've ever owned in terms of combining excellent sound quality with excellent noise isolation.

For that long of a trip do yourself a favor and invest in a nice pair... I have the BOSE and I can highly recommend for both comfort and quality :)

Well, if you want to go a less expensive route, head back to Target and get the Phillips Surround Sound ear plugs. They are comfortable, have great sound, and my pair have lasted me about 3 years of intermittent use.

I also have a pair of Bose earbuds and also recommend them for sound quality, but if you're going to be in a noisy environment at all, you might want to go another route. With the model that I had (sorry...don't have the model # or anything handy, and they're 3 flights down in the cold car :) ), they actually rest in the outer part of your ear as opposed to inside the ear canal, so you get a LOT of external noise making its way in. They were perfect for when I wore them at the office, for example, but almost useless at the gym (particularly because the boot camp instructors don't seem happy unless people 6 towns away can hear their chosen soundtrack for class. One of the women favors Miley Cyrus, for reasons best known to her, so noise isolation was EXTREMELY important to me. )

Those are the ones I loved. :thumbsup2

I have a pair Sony ear plugs that I bought at Target about 4 years ago that worked amazingly. They were only $30 and they canceled out noise, they had wonderful sound as well as stayed in my ear comfortably, even during runs. I lost them!

But, I bought another pair, similar but not the same, at Target about a week ago. Still Sony and only 18.99 and so far they seem to have the same quality.

Sennheiser makes some good quality headphones and earbuds that are from $30 to $80. I recently bought a set of Sennheisers and they work pretty good at canceling at noise.
