Anyone got any hints for how to make it STOP HURTING?

I'm already on anti-biotics for it.

Ibuprofen isn't working so great.

Sudafed! Not the stuff you get on the shelves, but you have to ask the pharmacist for it and they will make you show ID (it's a regulated substance because it can be used to make crystal meth). Sudafed will help dry up your sinuses and your ear canals and it will make the pressure (and therefore the pain) go away.

I used it a couple years ago when I got an ear infection a couple days before an 8 hour flight... I was worried that the pressure from the airplane would make the earache pain unbearable, and it really helped!

DD11 got an ear infection earlier this year, and the pain was just awful! I felt terribly for her.

The decongestand didn't help, the natural ear drops didn't help and Motrin didn't help. It wasn't until I piggybacked Tylenol on to her Motrin did she get any relief.

She did end up on antibiotics, and it took a couple of days until she felt completely better.

I'm just curious how long you've been on the antibiotics?

In any of my many past experiences w/ear issues, relief from pain started immediately with the meds. Unless the infection needed a stronger antibiotic. If you've been on them longer than 2 days, I suggest you talk to the doctor.

I'm not a doctor, just a Mom :flower3:
Feel better!

My ear was once so bad that the ENT doc punctured the eardrum (on purpose) to releive the pressure (rather than allowing to burst uncontrolled).

I hope that is not the case for you, but if it becomes unbearable you may need another visit.

I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks everyone!

I will try the hot water bottle tomorrow. I have been on anti-b's since yesterday, and I have an appointment with my regular dr tomorrow to see how it is doing.

Gotta love the DIS Docs!

Well once my ear was soooo bad.......;)

That I had to have a "wick" put in it. The entire canal was swollen. That was damn pain.

DH gets ear infections all the time. DS had an ear infection a few weeks back, and because we couldn't get in to see the Dr, the nurse said to put two drops of warm olive oil in his ear. I swear, I dropped two drops in, and he stopped screaming and just kind of took two breaths and calmed down. So, I think it worked. :) Maybe it's something to consider? There's info out there on it, google it!

I was just going to suggest the same thing. DS9 had a bad ear infection recently. I called the ped nurse and she said to put a TSP of olive oil in his ear canal. Then, make a heat pack by putting some uncooked rice in a sock and microwaving it for 45 sec. Then put the heat pack on the ear (DS put a towel in between the heat pack and his ear because the sock was very hot). This worked like a charm for him.

Good luck and feel better. :goodvibes

The above advice is spot on. Heat will relieve a lot of the pressure. Sudafed from behind the counter works well to drain the fluid out of your ears, too. I find holding my head over a bowl of steamy water (with a towel over my head and bowl) will relieve sinus pressure. It might work for ears, too. I also take a hot, hot shower which helps. I spent most of my childhood with various ear and sinus infections, and my first several years teaching I got every ear "thing" my students brought in. Few things are as miserable as an earache!

I'm an old pro at ear infections... in fact, being treated for one right now. The only thing that has ever really relieved the pain is heat. Either hot water bottle, heating pad, warm washcloth, whatever.

Get better soon!

I had an ear infection about a month ago. Got antibiotics and it stopped hurting but the fluid didn't go away. Phone doc said take lots of sudafed. I did - daily for a week, didn't exceed the max dose but took a lot. Went to the doctor and my blood pressure was 160 over something!!!!!!!! Got more antibiotics, I still have fluid. Five weeks and counting....have another appointment next week. Being deaf in one ear is very inconvenient.

That stinks!

I use a neti pot when I get sinus congestion and one of the bonuses when using it is that it'll relieve pressure in my ears too. Just a suggestion, if you've tried everything else.

I have chronic sinus problems.

Neti pot helps.
Sudafed
I have a steam machine that I use for breathing treatments but in a pinch, I stand in a shower with an umbrella over the shower head trapping the steam down around my face.

I have a microwavable heating tube to wrap around my head.

If none of this works, then it's on to vicodin.
