My son used to get ear infections all the time before having tubes put in. My daughter and I still get ear infections about twice a year. There is a prescription you can get from the pharmacy, but the doctor will have to give you a slip. It is called Antipyrine and Benzocaine Otic Solution USP. It is an drop that you put into the ear to numb it until the antibiotics kick in. It can be used every 2-3 hours as needed. The other thing that the doctor told us to do was give the kids Claritin to help reduce the fluid in the sinuses and ear canals.

this is going to sound stupid but it worked on my oldest for a week just a few weeks ago when he had this exact thing.

boil water (i mic'd it for 2:30 then dropped in a few paper towels squished out the extra water and put in the bottom of a cup and placed the cup over the ear wasn't 3 secs and he's like oww that popped and no more pain. It needs to be repeated but worked great while he was waiting on the next dose of sudafed.

I had an ear infection about a month ago. Got antibiotics and it stopped hurting but the fluid didn't go away. Phone doc said take lots of sudafed. I did - daily for a week, didn't exceed the max dose but took a lot. Went to the doctor and my blood pressure was 160 over something!!!!!!!! Got more antibiotics, I still have fluid. Five weeks and counting....have another appointment next week. Being deaf in one ear is very inconvenient.

I have had the same problem for a couple of weeks. I didn't find that the decongestant helped any. I never had any pain, but the clogging is horrible. DH is getting irritated with me because I can't hear him or the kids if they are on that side.

Maybe it's not such a bad thing after all.

I have drops for the kids. I buy them at Giant Market, in the regular ear/eye section. They are in a small box, brown with flowers on it (I think). THey say on the box for relief of ear ache. My kids say that they work.
