Ear pain on airplane

Along with the other mentioned remedies, it was recommended to me by an ear doctor to chew licorice instead of gum as it is the swallowing, not the chewing that helps with the pressure. My daughter takes a sudafed the night before, and thirty minutes before the flight takes off. She also uses Earplanes and Afrin spray. It has made a remarkable difference.

Another EarPlanes & Afrin user. Works great. Had rupture during one flight many years ago, so I won't fly without these now.

you can also get the earplanes at Rite Aid. I dont usually have that much problem myself-chew alot of gum. I will get the ear planes for my kids and husband. I will have some Afrin as well with me. Thanks for the advice :wave2:

I'm so glad I found this thread. I totally panic when my ears get clogged.

I don't get the "pain" unless I have a head cold or my allergies are really bad. I've tried the "holding the nose" and blowing thing but that usually just makes the ear clog more.

I was wondering, since my problem only occures when decending, do you think I could keep the ear plans out of my ears and only insert them prior to landing? I detest not being able to hear or having the sensation of a clogged ear. DH tells me I'm nuts  but I tell him...well I can't post what I tell him.:rotfl:

I'm already stocking up on Afrin and I'm really making sure I don't forget my allergy meds.

I'll look for the ear planes just incase I give them a try!

Ms. WDW--

My son's pediatrician told me the pain (for babies anyway) is much worse on the landing than on the take-off. The thing you have to remember is the descent starts much sooner than you think it will, sometimes 40 minutes before you're due to land. When you start hearing a lot of babies crying at the same time, that's when the descent has started.:(

If you have the earplanes with you, I'd advise putting them in for the takeoff as well.

For those of you who've used them......I know someone said you can hear. But is it muffled ? You know like you have clogged ears?

My allergies are raging this week and I'm getting just a tad concerned about the flight. I go for my shots the week before we go but you never know. I'll be popping my allergy pills faithfully the week before and spritzing the ole nose before we take off and land!

:sunny: try sucking boiled sweets or drinking a drink through a straw. hope this helps.

p/s if not try using decongestant
