I found this write-up from July 2001 regarding the Eagle Pines plans. It also points out the member growth. July 2001 they use 60,000 as the member figure. Today, they are using 75,000.

Eagle Pines

I think these plans have changed since SSR was announced after the travel slump. There may not be an Eagle Pines.

Very possible, but I would submit the following...

Disney is well into DVC. BCV sold out in record time. SSR offering a 50 year deeded lease. Point prices going through the roof.

While they can buy some time with the expansion of SSR, IMHO Disney sees DVC as a guaranteed positive cash flow, and they will never let themselves get into a position where they do not have an onsite resort to market for the foreseeable future.

I see an Eagle Pines offering in the next two years.

BCV created tremendous interest in DVC both for direct purchases from Disney (note how quickly BCV sold out) and for resale market.

I believe Eagle Pines will be built if SSR sells fast. The concept for it sounds interesting. If SSR does not sell quickly, then EP may be held back, possibly as the large resort anchor for a DVC III?.

I anticipate that other popular resorts like AKL may see modest sized DVC additions in the future. I would consider the Contemporary, Poly and GF as candidates. But I question whether those sites can support the additional development.

They could build a standalone monorail DVC resort using the TTC to Epcot line and build somewhere along that corridor. That is an underutilized area. But I believe there are strong economic reasons to add DVC to existing resorts where restaurants and all of the associated service infrastructure are already in place. Established infrastructure, I believe, was the element that propelled SSR to reality so quickly.

If the fifth park project gets a green light there will be ancillary development around it for resorts and the like. I supsect DVC would be part of those plans as well.

Years ago, I remember reading about the 5th park being a thrill park, more to compete with Universal. If (when) they do build it, I think they should have it on a lake with resorts (including 1 or 2 DVC resorts) and a monorail line. Maybe they could even place the Venetian here?

I'd also like to see a DVC at AKL. :) 'VAKL'

I really would only be passing on rumors but a US version of Tokyo Disney Sea is one that I heard. It is the best theme park Disney has ever built. It is a testament to what the team is capable of when they are given adequate financial resources to do it right. However, I doubt the suits in Anaheim would ever green light that much money.

" It is the best theme park Disney has ever built."

Did you forget Disneyland or wdw Magic Kingdom? Or do you actually think Disneysea is a better park than Disneyland?

I totally agree with this concept.

I did not forget the others. DisneySea is the best example of the Disney imagineers taking their creativity, attention to detail, storytelling and design capabilities to the highest level. It all began with DL (the only park built under Walt's careful direction). The skills have gotten better and the Disney Sea project had adequate financial resources.

Disney does not have an ownership interest in the Japan parks; only a licensing agreement. Disney has a minority ownership interest in the Hong Kong and Paris parks. DL and WDW are the only wholly owned Disney parks.

Very interesting. I had no idea.

The large investment in Disney Sea was made by the Oriental Land Company, builder (and presumably owner) of Disneyland Tokyo and Disney Sea. They are much more forward-looking than Disney Co and not afraid to make long term investments. We can only pray that Disney Co is still capable of the same kind of vision and long term investment.

IF there is to be a 5th park at WDW, Disney Sea makes the most sense and it is my top choice. A USO rip-off thrill park does not make sense. Rides like Mission Space and Expedition Everest provide plenty of thrills by doing what Disney does best -- imagineering and detailed theming. These rides indicate that Disney intends to deal with the thrill issue on a park-by-park basis rather than in a separate park.

Disney should not choose to compete in the "coasters on concrete" market, where they have no advantage over anyone else.
