e-Tickets from UCT and upgrading

Can I purchase the e-tickets from uct, put them onto MDE and my magic band, and still be able to upgrade to an annual pass at the gate (after first use)? Do they just scan our magic bands for the ticket information before upgrading? Or do I need to purchase the actual tickets from uct and have them with me?
