My oldest Dd is almost 10, and in 4th grade, she is a very good reader- she mows through books in a few days (HP Deathly Hallows in 5 days) she is very responsible and a good kid- anyway as I was looking through Borders the other day I saw many books I know she would love to read. We do visit the library often as well-- I was wondering if anyone has had experience wiht their kids having a Kindle, Nook or any other E reader. The main reason I would get it for her is because she reads so much, and after she has read somethig I wouldn't have the book sitting around the house forever (yes I realize that is the purpose of a library) I am leaning more towards a Nook simply because it has more tiles, it works with the library, and has the lend me feature.-- any thoughts? Thanks!!

In a heartbeat I would get an ereader for a child that loves to read. Best Buy has the basic Nook in their Black Friday ad for $99 and often they have pre-sales online (or for instore pick up) on Thursday.

IF you will use it with the library, I think it would be fine. What I have noticed on my Nook is that BN doesn't seem to have many young readers or teen level books, I've seen a couple of VERY little kids books (Berenstein Bears, for example), and tons of adult titles, but very very few at my dd10 interest level, and she read all the HP, Twilight, etc as well.

I also would recommend an E-reader for a child. I recently purchased one of the refurb Nook that was a topic on the Budget Board for myself as it was compatible with the Library. I have goten to use it very little as my son who is 12 grabbed it and is reading like crazy. He visites the library on-line every other day. He tells me that a lot of kids have these and use them in study hall.

A friend of mine got her son (He's 7) a Nook a few weeks ago. He so far LOVES it. He thinks it's the coolest thing since sliced bread, and it has helped his reading by leaps and bounds. :thumbsup2

DD is 10 1/2 in 5th grade and is getting the wi-fi Kindle for Christmas. She is a huge reader and there are lots of books on amazon that she would love. I also think she will love getting samples. DH and I have Kindles so we will just add her to our account.

I would get her the Nook, basically because of the library feature. If your library doesn't have a good selection you can always join the Free Library of Philadelphia. Its $15/year for a non-resident and they have a great selection of ebooks.

I think the library feature is the only accurate part of this - the Kindle has a much better library, in my opinion, than B&N, and it will also have the LendMe feature - with exactly the same rules - as the Nook. Amazon announced this feature is coming soon.

I would get her a Nook if you want the library access but otherwise I would get a Kindle - it has more features and I think Amazon has a much better selection for her age group.

I think an e reader is a great idea for a kid. Bought our 16yo one and she loves it.

I think that getting an ereader at that age is great. I hope to get my DD an ereader next year. I would first look online to see who has the best stock of books most suited for her. Then buy the ereader who would best suits that need.

I have a Nook, but that is suitable for me and my reading needs. I can't see my daughter wanting to read library books and right now they are limited in what they have.
