I just got this e-mail. It is from a person that I know but she has never sent me any e-mail before this. We do have friends in common. I remember reading here a while back about an e-mail like this that tells you to delete something from your files but it is something that you shouldn't delete. Can someone read through this and tell me if this is the one? It says something about a teddy bear and that is what makes me think it is the one I read about.Thanks.

To Everyone,
I am so sorry about this, but a new virus was passed onto me by someone in my address book. PLEASE check to see if this got passed onto you as well. The virus (called jdbg.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee anti-virus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before
damaging the system. It is sent automatically by 'messenger' and by address book, whether or not you sent e-mail to your contacts.
Here is how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it. Please do this!

1. Go to Start, then click your 'Find' or 'Search' option

2. In the folder option, type the name... jdbgmgr.exe

3 Be sure to search your C Drive and all the sub folders and any other drives you may have

4. Click 'Find Now'

5. The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe

Do not open it!

6. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and choose "Select All" to highlight the file without opening it.

7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then go to the recycle bin. If you find the virus, you must contact all the people in your Address Book so that they may eradicate the virus from their own address books.

To do this:

1. Open a new e-mail message

2. click the icon Address Book next to 'TO'

3. Highlight every name and add to "BCC"

4. Copy this message and paste to e-mail

Once, again, I am so sorry about this. I had no idea this was on my PC until the person who gave it to me let me know.

Thank you,

Becky

I got this a few weeks ago and it was just a hoax. If you already deleted it...it is still ok and won't mess your system up

I am sure someone has a link to it somewhere

The JDBGMGR.EXE file is a legit Windows operating system file. Some rules of thumb:

* if you merely find JDBGMGR.EXE on your computer, then it's probably not infected; but

* if you receive JDBGMGR.EXE as an email attachment, then it probably is infected.

Vmyths predicts this urban legend will someday turn into mass hysteria for the following reasons:

1. The basic chain letter identifies an obscure file found on tens of millions of PCs -- and it offers simple instructions on how to find the file in question.

2. The file uses a teddy bear as its associated icon, giving the impression an immature hacker drew it.

3. Gullible users will assume they found a dangerous virus -- simply because they found a file on their PC

Okay, let's say you deleted the file before you learned of this web page. How much self-inflicted damage did you bring on yourself? Vmyths posed this very question to Microsoft. Their answer:

If a user has Visual J++ 1.x installed but JDBGMGR.EXE is missing, the net result would be that some Java programs wouldn't run. In all other cases, there would be no effect from deleting the file.

Microsoft's response raises two philosophical questions:

1. How many more files will gullible users delete before they finally self-crash their own computers?
2. Will gullible people blame themselves for self-crashing their own computers?

The Jdbgmgr.exe file mentioned in the hoax has a bear icon. The actual W32.bugbear@mm worm file is a .exe file and does not have a bear icon.

The Windows Jdbgmgr.exe file has a teddy bear icon in the hoax. Like
the SULFNBK.EXE hoax, this bogus virus warning (also known as the "Bear Virus") attempts to lure gullible users into deleting perfectly innocuous, standard Windows files from their systems.

In this case the target file is JDBGMGR.EXE, a Java Debug Manager program used by the Microsoft Java runtime engine. This file is included as part of a standard Windows installation and is not a "virus." (The icon for this file is a graphic of a bear.)

Here are two more sites that talk about this urban legend:

Oddball, please don't delete them. They are supposed to be there. It is part of your operating system on Windows and are not a virus.

MICKEY88,
I went to the address at Microsoft that tells you what to do if you deleted the file but I couldn't find any info. to help me restore the file. I have Windows XP Home. What am I doing wrong ?

I just used my system restore on my computer and I got the jdbgmgr.exe files back .
