I posted a week ago about having great trouble flying back to Canada from Orlando after the new rules kicked in. I e-mailed the American Airline customer service dept. asking for clarification on Canadians flying back to Canada without a passport and I just received the following:

Dear Ms. Ford:
I can see how frustrating your experience with us was, and I'm truly sorry for all that happened. As the Immigration Specialist for Customer Relations, I appreciate being able to clarify that the new passport requirement applies to entry into the United States, as you explained to our representative. Since you were returning to your country of residence, there was no need for a passport. I've alerted our Station Manager in Orlando to ensure that our agents understand this policy.
We know we can't take your business for granted. We must earn it and we are working hard to do just that. I assure you that your constructive criticism will help us make sure that we live up to your expectations -- and ours. We'll look forward to welcoming you aboard again soon.

So you can fly back to Canada without a passport, it is just that some airline employees do not know this.
