I had read this study earlier and found it to be extremely interesting. The theory makes sense but this finding is only preliminary. I figured some DIS moms might want to do a little extra hand washing just in case and remember not to change diapers over any area where baby sleeps. They think that stomach sleeping may be linked to ingesting e. Coli from the crib sheets.
They also think that this may be why a large percentage of babies die from SIDS while at daycare (not the most sanitary place) and why breastmilk seems to help (creates anti-bodies to this curlin protein e. coli by-product formed in the tummy).
68 SIDS babies were tested and all had curlin in their blood, 60 babies that had died from other causes or were still alive had no curlin in their blood.
Here is some info...I couldn't find where I read the entire study though. It is definitely interesting.
