Could anyone give advise/opinion on what to do for this situation?

I will be traveling in November with my family of 4 and my SIL's family of 4.

We arrive at AKL on Monday for a 5 night stay.
SIL arrives at ALK on Tuesday for a 4 night stay.

We are planning on going to Legoland on Friday.

On Saturday we all move to RPR at Universal.

We fly home on Monday.
SIL and co. on Tuesday.

Trying to decide about renting a car? When? From what rental company? Where to pick up/return the car?

First thought is take Magical Express and rent a car/two cars/van on Friday AM drive to Legoland then wake up Saturday and drive to Universal and return the car. Then take Uber to the Airport.

I am trying to have the solution be cost effective but also convenient.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Car rental prices are so variable from day to day and location to location. In general, the price at the Airport will be a little higher due to Airport use fees. But you could find a deal that offsets that anyway. A rental costs day by day until you book a whole week and then the price per day may be better ... in other words 7 days might be the same cost as 6 days. But not always!

I would price a car from the airport using any of the major travel sites, and I would check Dollar and Enterprise since those are the large brands I see most often with lower rates. Then I would check a rental from Thursday afternoon or Friday morning depending on when you want to get going to Legoland, with pick up from a WDW or US 192 West location (many offer shuttle service to pick you up) with drop off at the airport... being sure there is no extra fee to pick up and drop at two locations (there is no usually any extra fee.)

Weight this against the cost of transportation from Universal to Airport for all of you too... and be sure your car size will fit the luggage for all of you even if you hold your carryons on your laps.

Also, bring your insurance declarations page if you intend to decline insurances. Insurances can double your daily cost... and make it much easier if you damage. But I usually decline.
