A dear family friend of many, many years sadly passed away on Thursday from a DVT.

He returned from a Holiday to Australia three weeks ago and has not been very well, going back and forth to the doctors. It wasnt until the Post Mortem that it was discovered.

He was 65 and had taken early retirement a few years ago to spend time with his wife doing what they loved the most - travelling and seeing the world.

Please, please remember to take all necessary precautions to avoid DVT.

I just felt it appropriate to post this timely reminder.

Janice, I'm really sorry to hear your sad news.

Very sad news, indeed. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend...

Could you answer a question for me? Being a Yank, I'm not sure what you mean by DVT. What does the abbreviation stand for??

Sorry to hear about your friend, it is truly sad.

:(

D.V.T =DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS. or blood clots which gather in leg (or other parts of body) and break off and travel to the heart.

sorry to hear your news janice.

i have actually purchased pairs of flight socks from Boots for our upcoming flight in November as they have had some very good reports on these.

So sorry to hear about your friend Janice, my thoughts are with you and your friends family.

so sorry to hear that Janice {{{{{hugs}}}}} to you.

Like Alison, I bought some of the flight socks for when we went at christmas and found them to be really good, my legs didn't swell up and they felt really comfy.

Janice,

What Terrible news:(

I better make sure we buy some flight socks before we fly to Fort Lauderdale in July, we don't always take these things seriously it makes you think when you hear something so terrible.

Wow Janice. That's terrible.

I have always taken the warnings about DVT with a pinch of salt. Maybe I should think again.

Janice, I'm so sorry - how awful. What were your friend's symptoms? Where it's been linked to flying, I've always assumed it happens immediately afterwards.

Oh that's terrible Janice.:(

I also thought it was immediately after or during a flight that these things happened. Thanks for the heads up that it isn't.

Thank you everyone for your kind messages - it really is nice of you all.

Deb & Alison

As far as I know, he began to feel ill after the journey out to Australia, about 10 days into the holiday, went to a doctor there and was diagnosed with Shingles. On returning home, he felt much worse and went to the doctors here in the UK and was put on medications but they didn't think that it was Shingles - by this time he was feeling very weary all the time, breathless and lethargic. They had tested his heart, lungs, liver etc. but nothing obvious was detected. Sadly following his death a Post Mortem was carried out and it was then that it was discovered that he had died from DVT.

Here is an interesting article that has more info University of Essex Article

And have you seen these? Skywalker
