I recently purchased a 22in 1080 60hz lcd hdtv for my daughter. She will get in during Hanukkah so any day now. I want to get a dvd player but not sure which kind. We have comcast digital cable but not hd cable (and this is our first hdtv).

Initially it will not be hooked up to cable since dh says we need to do something to get the cable closer or something which fortunately makes sense to dh but not to non technical me. He will probably be home more before New Years and do it then but who knows.

I don't think we need blue ray since I don't see us purchasing blue rays for now and want to be able to play the regular dvds we already have. We might be able to hook up the free dtv box we got with an antenna for the time being. Would an upconversion dvd player have any benefit over a traditional dvd player without cable or with cable but no hd cable service?

With 1080 why not go with blue ray? I think blue ray players are back compatible with dvds, right?

Blu-ray players will play dvd's so I would still get a blu-ray player. In either case, having cable hooked up or not will have no impact.

Agreed - get a blu-ray player. They also play regular DVDs. :thumbsup2

Moreover, you may find yourself looking to do without cable for a while, and/or reduce your cable bill by having fewer cable boxes in your home. Many new Blu-ray Disc players also have Internet connections to online streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon.com, Blockbuster, etc.

If you are looking to save money, I'd scout around friends and family. You may know someone who recently upgraded to Blu-ray, and therefore they have a DVD player laying around. I wouldn't spend money for a DVD player at this point.

When you are looking at players, do not forget the PS3 which has a blueray and DVD player as well as internet capability and is a very popular video game platform. We spent a little extra for one in our bedroom and we're glad we have it.

Go Blu ray for sure.

Buying a reg. DVD for and HDTV is like buying an 8track tape player for a car.;)

Interestingly, many BluRay players will increase the resolution that DVDs play at, increasing the quality of the picture.

Please be aware that not all movies on BluRay are discernibly different quality wise to their DVD counterparts. Some are (such as Avatar) but others are pretty similar.
