I can't burn DVDs it says something about needing a decoder/encoder or something. Anyone know what this is or where I can get it?

What are you trying to burn and what are you trying to burn it with?

If it's just home movies that you're trying to burn, your burning software should install everything you need. Both Pinnacle Systems and Ulead make good software to do this.

If you're trying to 'decode' and copy a movie, you can't (very easy) because of copy protection. Google may be able to help you on this one.

As always, to protect yourself I'd suggest surfing with Firefox.

I put movies from my mini-dv tapes and it stored them in windows media format. I want to put them in to dvd format to they can be watched in a DVD player but it keeps giving me this message about having an endocer or something.

As someone posted earlier, you need some sort of DVD burning software. Several that come to mind are TMPGENC-DVD Author, Nero Express (part of the Nero CD/DVD burning package), and a whole raft of others. Here is a link from the website that I suggested earlier that has a comprehensive list of DVD authoring software:

I do know that I need a dvd burning program and I have one....that's whats giving me the message. BTW, its Nero.

Whoop. Sorry. I'm not certain if Nero can take WMF files as input. I'll look into why Nero is complaining, but I suspect it might be because you are missing the codec for MPEG2.

I've never been able to get Nero to work successfully for DVDs either. I assume it's the free software that came with the drive?

The software that I use for editing and burning is Ulead VideoStudio. You can download a free trial from them. I use it all the time (among others).

I have the retail version of Nero 6.0 and I wasn't aware that you needed to purchase the DVD encoder separately for the OEM version. Here is the link if you are willing to spend the $25 for the plugin:

I have used Ulead to author a DVD as it was bundled with one of my DVD burners. If you can get a trial copy of that software, that may be your best bet. And if Ulead installs a DVD encoder as part of their package, your Nero software might start working as well.

Tried that. Didn't work for me. :)

I ended registering the Ulead product. Works like a charm for me!
