For anyone that thinks this action by DVC warrants a class action against them, what exactly would you have had them do? There is no telling how many hours they have poured over this and poured over it again. I am also sure their legal team poured over it even more than that.
I think under the circumstance of dealing with a deadly pandemic that no one has ever dealt with or other than Bill Gates even imagined could happen, that what they have done is fair.
There was absolutely no way they were going to come up with a plan that suited every member., that just was not humanly possible.
I believe in karma and no way would I want to be the person that sues them over this.

I for one am very impressed by Disney’s endeavors to make the best of a very bad situation. No solution would ever be perfect, but in terms of “sharing the pain”, losing the ability to borrow 50% of points while keeping the ability to use, rent out, and bank those points in the future is certainly not something I will be complaining about.

I agree. Next year will be overloaded with points. I already mapped out possible dates for 2021 so that I can jump on them at 11 months.

Unfortunately, correct. But, as mentioned, you have at least tons of time to use them. May not be when you want, resort you want, or days you want, but they can be used,
Ehhhh... individuals with an April or June use year also time to use their points, they simply chose to use them at the end of the line. To then grant a 6 month extension to only those members however not members, say, in the December use year...when their points will still expire even though the are now severely limited with capacity....a slippery slope to be sure.

Well, to be fair, April is really getting at most 4 months because resorts won’t open until June at the earliest.

To be honest I think many of those extended points are not going to be easy to use, except in July.

So, while it seems like they were given something great, if there are no rooms or dates they can travel, it’s an extension worth zero.

Sounds so deceptively easy but would probably take weeks with whatever goat they use to run the system:surfweb:
Right now the system will allow you to book a points reservation for the first week of May. I would have thought fixing the system so that new May reservations were not allowed would have been even more deceptively easy, but obviously not.

We had our April trip cancelled and couldn’t move tp May with expiring June points because they were closed, and were told on three separate calls(2 from supervisors) that there was nothing we could do and had to move the points to RCI by 4/17 or lose them. Now a week after that’s done we could have kept them! And now if we run short we can’t borrow more than 50%. Not at all impressed with DVC when compared to how well DCL took care of people.

Pretty sure you can pull them back out of RCI if you choose to
But keep in mind, DCL and DVC are completely different beasts. In DCL, you are a renter. In DVC, you are the owner.

I’m an April UY, and like some I had to read this several times to digest it. I’m still not sure how this will affect me yet. I’ve got so many reservations right now with banked, current & borrowed points, 7 contracts, 3 homes. I’ve canceled so many times, I’ve lost track. I had reservations in April before my now canceled cruise, canceled reservations after my cruise. I’ve canceled my late May trip and now shoved everything into a mid August trip. I have cruises in September with room reservations all around them for both ourselves and family. If both August & September get canceled it will take awhile to sort out....total 600 points. Ugh, this makes my head spin. I will happily unborrow my 2021 points, so that’s not a problem. As long as I can continue to bank my 2020 points, that still works. Now the banked points confuse me, probably 300 of those.....oh my! All I can do is wait.

yes, on FB people have reported that they called MS and gotten their points back!

We’ll be on with them this morning, that would be great if it works out that way. I’m surprised they decided to go this way knowing the influx of points, if it goes too long resorts will be flooded with points for the next couple years. When we were told we couldn’t move any cancelled trips past June, we were thinking well if you won’t let us use our points then pay us for them. I was thinking whatever points(dues) you lost, credit them to next years bill. Seemed like the easiest way but I can see where Disney doesn’t want to bleed any more money than they already are.

I would opt out of that lawsuit so fast, those ambulance chasers would need to read up on “Force majeure”

Disney was not required to do anything for owners whose points expired. Welcome to the world of owning real estate. The fact that they chose to do something that does not apply to all puts them in very murky water. This will not effect me at all this year, but whos to say the lack of inventory will not effect me for 2021 or 2022 or 2023? People in the know will definitely be banking now to avoid this backlog.

The move was akin to kicking the can down the road hoping that eventually one day it all evens out.

In this case, those 2 use years got a benefit (extension) that is going to potentially cause issues for me (us) down the road.

This is not something that effects me currently, but what if this move causes me to not be able to book and in turn, lose next year's points due to someone who was extended having booked a room?

The answer is that they cannot legally do that. The big failure in this plan is that "monitoring availability" and adjusting is too vauge as it doesnt address the situation I mentioned, other than saying we will give it a college try.

Unless Disney allows me to extend my points due to expiration or guarantees availability next year, they will lose that court battle.

Their best bet here would have been to move everyone to RCI when it was possible, just like they did.

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but I called Member Services to get some clarification on the grandfathering of borrowed points. In essence, as of yesterday, you are no longer allowed to borrow more than 50% of the future year's points. If you have already borrowed over the 50% threshold, and modify your reservation, as long as the new reservation does not require additional points to be borrowed, your reservation will not be cancelled.

I currently have two days booked at BWV in September using borrowed points (over the 50% threshold). I am hoping to switch those to BCV if that becomes available. Since the new reservation would not require additional borrowed points, that new reservation would not be cancelled because the borrowing transaction took place prior to yesterday.

I don’t think they could have paid for them because remember, this isn’t Disney, it is our association and legally, they’d have to find a way to absorb that cost via dues,

Maybe there were not that many people moved points to RCI and thus, decided to work with them to allow the pull back?

I am happy you will get them returned for use.

Agreed

This change is bonkers, how many are really going to be able to go in that window i'm sure a very small %. but now this change with the 50% thing has ruined even more trips planned. I'm sure there isn't an easy fix or anything but this just feels like DVC just put everything on there members. Not a happy owner right now.

but that’s the other side of the coin, by being an owner (and not a renter), not only do we partake in the benefits of ownership, but we also assume the risks.

we agreed to the borrowing rules/restrictions when we signed contracts, I’m just glad they didn’t make it 0%.

No mention of OTU points to round out a reservation, do you think they will still offer those while limiting borrowing?
