Where were you at during the storm?

We had just checked out of BCVs and were supposed to fly home
but obviously didn't so we were at Pop Century.

The next night 8/14 we were at the Wyndam in DTD and then
Caribbean Beach from 8/15 to 8/17.

Pop CMs came around our room at about 5ish and told us to stay
in our rooms. I think they shut down the food court and the main
building.

The CMs were phenomenal I thought. DH didn't like working with
CRO for reservations though......

The next few days the CMs were kinda shell shocked but were
very helpful and did a great job.

I was not at WDW but I live in Seminole County just north of Orlando. It was very scary here for awhile. We are still cleaning up debris and many continue to be without power. Schools are closed for the rest of the week and it is difficult to find ice, water, gas etc. I consider us very fortunate compared to our neighbors down south that lost everything.

We went thru Andrew in 1992 and were in DC during 9/11, Anthrax and Sniper. DH and I are beginning to feel like disaster magnets...At least we can always go to Disney for the day!

We were at OKW during the storm, with the blinds and curtains closed and the aerobed on its side in front of the big window. Luckily, all was fine and we didn't even lose power. Our biggest problem was getting gas on Monday morning for our drive home. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the Florida residents who have lost so much, and continue to struggle for basic necessities.

You were right about the gas.

The Hess's on Buena Vista was out of gas Monday night and we
had to go to the one near MK. Didn't want to even try out
of WDW.

We had left OKW on Friday and rode out the storm at the Sheraton Safari, just outside the gates near DTD.

It was amazing to watch what was going on outside.

We were supposed to leave on Saturday but didn't leave until Monday....spent the rest of the time at Sheraton Safari but got to go back to the parks, which was fun.

We were in a groudn floor studio at SSR for the storm. Spent the time on the far side of the room watching TV and a tree fell on the patio next to ours. We did not leave until Tuesday and were able to get gas at the Hess on BV Drive.

We were on our way to FW on Friday when Charley went through...

Luckily, we heard about the hurricane on the weather channel while we stopped in Chattanooga, TN and decided to layover for a few nights there...

We arrived a day early on Sunday, and ended up at Pop Century for the night.. WOW! The lines were unbelievable at Check-in... Everyone who was out of power in Orange County must have been checking in...

Trees were down all over at PopC...

We arrived at Fort Wilderness on Monday morning... The security guard let us know that the whole campground had been evacuated during the storm, and hadn't yet reopened because of the cleanup process. Again, WOW! FW opened around 16:00 on Monday, and we managed to check in... We have talked with several other families who had been here, had left, and then came back again...

Looking around FW, you can definately tell why they needed the place evacuated... Trees are down all over the place.. Several of the trails are blocked off... One tree came down and just missed the Settlement outpost...

There is also four or five trees down just 3 or 4 ft from my cabin porch...

We were at Pop Century also. We were only going to make a quick Disney trip; plans were to be in Clearwater Beach for business 8/11-16; I'd gotten AP rate at Pop Century for those last two nights ((8/16 & 8/17) since our flight home was out of Sanford/Orlando.
Thursday morning, (8/12) we were told we had to evacuate Clearwater Beach by 6pm so I called Disney and asked if they could extend my reservation. I ignored that little voice in the back of my mind that said..."oh, go for at least a moderate..or see what else is available... go for it..." and as the wind was picking up I further ignored that voice that said, "it's 6 nights.. gee...call member services...you can borrow from next use year.. " But noooooooo.. I didn't listen!! <G>
Took us 3 and a half hours to get to Disney... not too bad considering the number of cars getting out of that area. It was just DH and myself.. and we figured it's just a room.... but I think we've gotten spoiled... we love having the villa to spread out in; and being able to walk to Epcot and MGM. If it had been only for the 2 original planned nights it would've been okay.. but we found we felt cramped.
DH had to go back to Clearwater on Sunday and returned Monday afternoon. He suggested late Friday afternoon that we call and see if there was a least maybe a studio (hopefully maybe a 1 bedroom at BWv or BCV or WLV) available that we could switch over to for the rest of the trip. I told him member services was closed for the weekend and I really didn't know at that point if there was any way you could call and use points. (BIG SIGH!!!!)
It's not that Pop Century was horrible or anything.. though we did find our room to be very noisy. It seemed like we could hear endless showers..and gurgling water that would wake us at 5:30 am. And we really missed having a refrigerator or a coffee maker... and some kind of balcony. We felt cramped.
I've read variious comments on different boards about how responded to the hurricane. We'd gone to Epcot on Thursday afternoon; the day that they'd closed the parks at 1pm as the hurricane was approaching. It looked strange; so many of the "normal" things; tables with umbrellas had been taken away, carts that were still out had been secured with straps and bolted to the pavement; the ticket booths were wrapped tightly with plastic; etc. In one of the articles in the Orlando paper a park vistor commented that she thought they could've kept the parks open longer for the "enjoyment of the guests." JEESH!!...Like, these preparations are easy and quick to do??? About 3pm we'd gotten a letter hand delivered to our room, which among other things, asked that we now remain in our room, as Charley was approaching. As the wind picked up, I could still hear the sound of kids running past my room. Occasionally I'd peek out... oh, yeah.. there they'd go... not kids returning from somewhere).. no.. these were the same 3 kids... they were playing. I guess Mom and Dad got tired of them being in the room. Let 'em out to "play." How nice. They were throwing a ball then running after it.. later they were throwing ice off the side of the walkway.

Pop Century and All Stars are fine, just not what we want for
our Disney Vacations. We won't be staying again.

I will tell you CBR was fantastic however. I am truly sold on
Moderates as a way to handle weekends/extended stays
when you are out of points.

Yup, we stuck out the storm in our BWV home! Me, dh, our 3 kids, plus bil, sil and their 2 boys. We are technically still on "vacation" (we are at "grandma's house" now en route back home...) We were at BCV for 2 days, then had moved over to BWV on Sunday (the 8th) as Charley crept ever closer. Personally, we were quite impressed with BWV's "durability" -- we now feel fairly secure in our investment, seeing how it came through the storm! Personally, I think it weathered better than others because it doesn't have as many surrounding trees (like, say, OKW or SSR, which had so many trees uprooted all over creation, or BCV which had so much debris in SAB...) At about 8:55 pm (which was the worst part of the storm) the parking lot let out a loud pop and the power went off in the lot for all of about 5 seconds. No biggie -- it came back on as the wind continued to whip, and gradually, subsided.

The one thing I DO have to add about all this is that we experienced great disappointment in our fellow humanity. They closed all the restaurants on the BW due to the storm -- couldn't get a meal anywhere after 1 pm. HOWEVER -- BW resort, in an attempt to serve its customers in safety, decided to offer us all a "meal" in the lobby at 4:30 pm. So my SIL and the kids and I all tooled on down at 4:30 but by that time the food was quite gone. Seems some folks took far more than their share. One guy was spotted with several bags of food and about 6 cookies and such -- someone on the elevator commented, "Wow -- that's a lot of food -- you must have family waiting in a Grand Villa, huh!" His response was, "No -- just me and my buddy in a studio... but we plan to eat a lot." Now perhaps he was kidding -- but needless to say it made some folks irate when they then arrived in the lobby and there was nothing to be had. The BWV managers looked frazzled -- they told us all to return to our rooms and they would call us when more food was available. My SIL and I weren't too too concerned -- after all, we had a kitchen, food, and the power to cook. We ended up making pancakes. I felt badly for those who were in the BW Inn and had no kitchen or supplies -- that must have really stunk. We never did get "the call" (from BWV) -- at 9:30 pm (after the main storm impact had passed) I called down to make sure they wouldn't call us in the night. I said, "It's ok -- we aren't in need or anything -- I just want to confirm that there will be no food in the lobby tonight, correct, and we won't be getting any calls tonight?" THe desk seemed very agitated and the lady just sighed exasperatedly and said, "All I can tell you ma'am is that everything is CLOSED."
(extra emphasis was placed on that last word). Well, considering the fornt desk staff all lives in the area and had the added concern of their own homes, their families, etc., their lack of patience was surely understandable. Personally, I thought it was over the top for them to even consider feeding us -- a noble gesture foiled by the greed of others! The mgmt said it was like a stampede and poof -- all the food just disappeared. I think one guy quoted a number like 1600 sandwiches vaporizing.

Will post our trip report later with other storm details -- but just thought I'd add to this Charley thread. IN short -- we survived!
