How do I learn about the DVC without the sales pitch? I also dont want to read through War and Peace. Just the Cliff Notes.

I love Disney my DW is somewhat interested. I think she likes the planning part. DD16 Complains like any teenager but when she's down there its another story DS14 is my clone, he loves Disney. He can't wait to hit the MK for the smells!

I haunted these boards for months before we purchased resale (not posting, just lurking and reading). If you're not in a hurry to buy, that's an option.

I am sure any question you can think of has been asked at sometime on these boards, but in the event you don't find it or just don't have the time, ask away with specific questions. I have found everyone here to be very helpful. Also send for the info packet from DVC, we did before we purchased (i didn't have the good fortune of finding the DIS before I bought) and we never got any sales calls and were never pressured.

These boards are an excellent source of information. Taking the tour was the best thing that we could have done, though. While we were there on our last trip, we finally decided to give in and take the tour. That sealed the deal for us. The whole tour process was very very low pressure. Very informative. Clearly our guide was showing us all of the pros of DVC, but we expected that. He did not try to get us to committ in any way while we were there. We came home read all of the info, watched the DVD and ended up buying more than the minimim.

You can order the DVD on the DVC site. It is easy to watch and contains lots of great information.

Timeshare Store (sponser at top of this page) has a new 16 page brochure they can provide you. We learned about DVC in depth from these boards and what we couldn't find, we called DVC direct and asked. There was NO pressure what so ever! We even told them 150 points was too many for us and we were considering a smaller package of pts through resale and this did not affect of conversation with our CM. We then spoke with Jerry at TS, again no pressure, and when we were ready, we took the plunge! best wishes to you!

A number of Disney websites have excellent DVC FAQ's. Do a Google search on "Disney Vacation Club FAQ" and you'll find them. After you read up a little, stop back here and ask any questions you might have.

If you are going to be in WDW, I would just do the sales pitch.
It's no pressure and only takes an hour or two. You get accurate information, you can ask questions and get the answer right away, and you can see the models first hand.

Glad you are interested and this is a great resource, lots of experts here. Couple of comments. Do consider the Disney sales pitch to get that perspective and all the “official details” (you can also get some freebees). Next, sit down with your family and determine what your vacation patterns will be for at least the next 10 or so years and come to some understanding from everyone if you commit, but also remember that your commitment may be for the next 40 or so years unless you decide to sell later. Frankly spend some time and do your homework, DO NOT depend on others to do your work!, its your decision . As for us (family of four) we have not regretted our purchase.

As a new person to the board I guess I can help put a spin on this too. Last feb we went on the disney crusie and took the dvc sales pitch. It was completely no pressue and we seriously thought aboiut it, but decided to come home and re-examine in 6 months. After the crusie we even drove over to SSR and looked at the models. They were really nice but we werent sure if we were ready. No one ever called, sent us a letter or pressured us in ANY way. We started thinking again how nice disney would be with a now 3 yr old and 3 month old. We started doing some research, and saw that a resale in SSR at $83 a point with our own financing (home equity loan 7% instead of disney personal loan financing at 10%) was worth it. I must admit that before we plunged, it was well worth reading these boards, and doing financial homework. Buy new or used its still disney!
Dont make the jump if your not financially able to do it, cuz you'll always sweat it, and thats not the way to do a vacation. But bottom line, do your homework, read the boards and when YOUR ready, and feel comfortable, do it.

I've never heard the Disney sales pitch. Looking at internet articles is what I did.

The basics are pretty easy. You get the same number of points each year on which you pay dues. Up to six months before your points expire you can bank your points into the next year (one year only). You can borrow points from next year. You can reserve 11 months in advance at home and seven at any other resort - subject to availability.

DVC is a timeshare, not a hotel. That means things like "planning ahead is helpful" and "you won't get your bed made every day."

That's about all I've been required to understand. That and the point charts at the top of the page. However, if you want to do more with your points, you'll need to understand more.

These boards have excellent advice, but you have to search through it & if you put it your prospective there is enough to be war & Peace. Actually the Disney tour would be the cliff notes but with all the info you need & you have all the ability to ask & receive immediate answers.

I will back up what everyone else is already posting. Read here on the Dis, check the other websites mentioned and just ask questions. There are more then enough "experts" here willing to help!

When I took the tour, it was one of the easist timeshare presentations I ever took. No hard seel, no big pressure, just presentation of the units and explaination og how the system works.

Our kids are 22,16,and 14 and can certainly relate to your family experience at Disney with the kids. Its the only trip we can take as a family and do not need to take friends to keep the kids occupied.

In general I am not a fan of 'sales pitch' - but both my DH and I took the tour and found it to be a very low pressure worthwhile experience - but it was after we had done all of the research so we knew what to expect and came prepared

As everyone else has said - read the boards they are a great help

Well, as for us we never did the tour. We were visiting Disney at Easter and I watched the tv channel on DVC. On the plane ride hime my husband asked if we going back in Nov. I told him we needed to look at the DVC if we were going back so soon. We started to talk to some friends who have a DVC and got the number of their guide. We called him he answered all of our questions and sent us the DREAM package. within a week of speaking with our guide we singned paperwork. I did not find the DIS boards until the day before we signed. So, I guess if you do not want to do the tour and spen 1-2 hours of your vacation time (which I did not with a 9 month old and a 4 year old) then call and get the DREAM package and talk to a guide. It worked for us.
