DVC Y Membership Benefits for Family & Adults with disabilities

I have a couple of questions about DVC benefits for family members.

Two of my grown children are into Disney. One, an adult child with whom we are legal guardians for, loves Disney. She can now navigate very well doing the parks on her own when we stay at DVC properties - and she loves it. She has an annual pass and orders food in the parks via mobile ordering. We are getting older and prefer to enjoy the resort outside a day or two over three week long stays.

My challenge is that she could really benefit from membership lounges. Her medical needs would mean a place to take a break would be a real benefit, and she loves meeting characters. BUT, from what I understand, my husband or I would have to be with her to gain access because we are the ones on the deed. I would add her to the deed, but I have to sign for her legally, so I wonder if she can legally be added??

Anyone else have experience with this? I would buy the MMB if she could use it, but even though she lives with us and we are guardians, membership services is saying no.

In order to get DVC Y, which entitled her to buy MMB, she needs to be an owner…on the deed.

I can’t answer how it would work based on the fact you have to sign, but I imagine it can still be done since you have that authority.

You may need to check with an attorney if she is unable to sign because that is essentially putting her in a position of financial responsibility that may not be advisable. Also check if ownership may impact any disability benefits or services because you don’t want to jeopardize those if there is an asset limit.

Those were concerns I had. From what I can tell, a timeshare is not an asset. There is only one thing she gets that has an asset limitation. My bigger concern is what you noted about potential liability for dues.

I think I’m going to talk to DVC sales when I’m down there in a few weeks. Member services on the phone told me I’d need to contact member admin but they had no phone number to give me???

Check with your attorney. SSI and Medicaid both consider a timeshare an asset. Whether it would impact her eligibility may depend on other factors.
This is correct… if the asset exceeds the limit, any benefits paid would have to be returned and future benefit eligibility would be denied.

I don't think DVC Sales or Membership Services can adequately advise you on this matter. Your estate attorney and/or her guardianship attorney would likely have better advice to protect your daughter. Please be aware of future repercussions regarding inheritance. If she is on the deed, ownership may transfer directly to her, rather than going through probate or terms of the will(s). Access to a lounge during a few vacation visits can't be worth messing up her future financially.

Good information. We have a trust established already for her. There is another thread that started after this by someone where we are discussing title changes to involve adult children where we have further discussion on putting the title in the name of a trust and then who is entitled to the member benefits.
