DVC warn you before a resort sells out?

Since we're fairly new DVC members, we haven't experienced a resort selling out. What I want to know is, does DVC give you a couple months official notice before a resort sells out? I'm wondering this because we want to do a 50 point add-on, but won't comfortably have the money until June or July. I'd hate to find out in May that the resort is about to sell out in 2 weeks. I'm hoping DVC gives its members more official notice than that. Do they?

Since Disney will only allow you to add on in your use year, it doesn't make any difference if the "resort" is sold out - you need to be concerned about your use year selling out.

Would be a shame to have your guide track it for you only to discover that the resort was still selling, but your use year was gone.

(If you go resale, you can buy any use year. Many people don't think the closing costs are worth it on a small contract. Also, as far as buying a different resort, this may or may not work for you. I can see having two 150 point contracts at two different resorts, since this would basically allow alternate year trips via banking and borrowing. But 50 points at a different resort would be difficult for me to manage).

Let your guide know.

The scenario crisi described happened to us (with an eventually happy ending). I was in close contact with our guide about VWL selling out (and it was publicized all over the boards). We had to wait to see if we were going to have a big expense or we could use that $$ for a small add on. About every 3 weeks, our guide would say, "I think you'll be OK for another xxxxx amount of time", but he never guaranteed anything. We had all sorts of official notice that the resort was 'selling out'.

We absolutely DID NOT understand that we had to purchase the same use year --- don't know why it never came up in conversation and we didn't recall reading that, probably because we'd only been members about 7 months and just didn't pay attention. When I called to purchase the add-on, I was totally shocked to find out our use-year had sold out. We still have no idea what suddenly happened. Another guide suggested that they never know when someone will purchase hundreds of points. It was very, very disappointing, to say the least, but we just couldn't have made the committment to purchasing 60 more points when we thought we might have to spend $$$ for a medical reason.

We immediately went on a wait list and I'd check in every couple months with our guide. We got the add-on within 6 months and have been trying to figure out why we STILL don't have enough points.

Kda:

Disney law #5: The points you "need" (or is that want) to satisfy your DVC vacation dreams is always at least one add-on contract more than you own!!!!!!!!!!

Disney law #6: Disney law number #5 is immutable!!!

That law is soooo true, I can attest to it!!!! LOL

Hey, the good news is that Disney has been warning that HH and VB are "almost sold out" for the past two years! How's that for advance notice? ;)

When DVC tore down the Commodore house at OKW and added buildings 62, 63, and 64, we did a 50 point add-on to our March use year. About four months later, we got a letter telling us our March use year was almost sold out and to act soon. I'm not sure if they send blanket letters and merge your use year in, but our letter was specific about the use year selling out.

I don't remember any letters about BWV or VWL selling out, just when they were going to do point value increases.

So true about add-ons ... we could own enough points to live at DW and I'd still find a way to not have enough :)

It is usually your guide who will notify you. So, whether or not you get notified will depend on your guide. You should call your guide and explain your situation so your guide knows to notify you.
