DVC vs cash inventory question

I want to add 2 nights at the end of my trip and have those waitlisted for about 7 months, I see the room available to book cash with a promo discount.
Does anyone know if DVC will likely release that room back into inventory to book with points if it ends up not being booked directly? If so, when? I don't want to pay cash since I have the points available

Rooms find there way into cash for a few reasons. Some of them get there because owners exchange points for things like cruises, ABD, etc. Some are there because DVC has used their own points to book them and are renting them out and then some are there because we have entered the breakage period and DVC can offer for cash…although they can anticipate rooms that would go unbooked at the 60 day mark.

In terms of returning, it’s unlikely because there is no way to know why they are there. There have been reports that some have had luck within a week of check in in getting a room not on the website by calling MS.

If you are waitlisted for them and they've been turned over, its highly unlikely they'd ever be returned to "points inventory" - they've been turned over for one of the reasons Sandy mentioned - even if the room goes unbooked.

Back in the day when we first purchased DVC, our guide told us “once the points go into the cash inventory, they are never returned to DVC point inventory”.
I am not sure if that ever was or still is true but it stuck with me. I can’t remember my bike lock combo but I remember that from 15 years ago

For the most part, that is true. However, if a room was sent because it still wasn’t booked at the 60 day mark, and has not yet been booked by cash, DVC can sometimes get it back during that last week before check in.

Not guaranteed, and it is rare, but it has happened.

It can happen as we have gotten them before but you will have to call and have to get a cast member willing to do what is necessary to get it back.
