I have searched for this, but not found an answer. Called DVC, but oh my the hold time is really long, so I thought maybe someone here might have some info - if I purchase the DVC insurance for my family's upcoming stay, will it also cover us on the cruise that is part of our trip, and the rental home that we are staying in before the DVC stay? Or is the insurance only covering the part of the trip that has our DVC points applied to it?

The only part of the trip using our points is our stay at AKV. The rental home and cruise are all paid for with cash. For 5 people, it would certainly cost less to use the DVC insurance than to buy travel insurance elsewhere! If for some reason we were unable to take this trip, losing my points is not the big worry, it is losing out on the cruise fare, as this is the most expensive part of this trip.

I believe that the insurance plan offered by DVC only covers reservations made with points.

I agree, you would need separate insurance for the other parts of your vacation (especially the non-Disney part). I purchased an outside policy for our cruise last year.

What is interesting is the policy actually talks about cruises. I don't have the answer, but I'm wondering if a cruise booked on points would qualify as a trip under the plan. I'm not a fan of domestic trip insurance, so I'll never buy it for that reason, but considering this is a TimeShare insurance policy, I would think it falls back on your timeshare and if you're using your timeshare to trade out to something else it would be a covered trip.

Just got an email today from DVC regarding travel insurance for $79 ( it says new and improved travel ins.) Does anybody know the pros and cons buying ins. from DVC? Sorry to the OP for posting a follow up questions. We booked combination of points and cash. Thanks!

Thanks for the information! I was curious as the policy did mention cruises (as another poster said on here also), but I thought $79 was too good to be true for my whole trip! Guess I am off to research some trip insurance.

Here ya go:

Policy does not include NY or WA residents. There are different policies for those residents referenced in this policy.

Thanks for posting that link. Having read it, I'm actually more interested than I thought I'd be. It covers airline change fees, and the one fee you pay covers all your point trips for the year. One interesting thing to note: pre-existing conditions are not covered UNLESS you pay for the insurance at the same time you pay your annual DVC dues. So people might be interested in doing that now.

Too bad there is no coverage for making up snow days in June !!
