DVC tours?

Hi all I'm seriously considering buying into DVC as we've got lots of holidays planned and from what I've read it really sounds ideal. I noticed when I stayed at Pop Century back in January that they had a DVC kiosk near reception. I'm gathering that you can book a tour of a DVC resort or something? I'm really tempted to book to see one of the resorts when we next go (in July or August). I really like the idea of Boardwalk Villas - or is this all bought up now? Is this what you all did before you bought? Are the sales people pushy or are you left to your own devices?

This gives me the chance to tell you how much I enjoyed your trip report

The only DVC resort not sold out is the new Saratoga Springs (due to open this month). This is the one that Disney will tell you about if you sign up for a tour at a kiosk. In my experience, Disney does not do 'hard sell' and that seems to be the general view. The line is that Disney sells itself. Take it from me (an old cynic who took 2 visits and lots of calculations back in 1996 to be convinced) it's true! I've added on four times since my initial purchase and just love the DVC.

Now as far as Boardwalk is concerned, or any other DVC resort for that matter, the good news is that there is an active resale market and one of the companies involved is a DISboards sponsor http://www.dvc-resales.com/ I have never gone this route myself, but from what I have read, it is quite straightforward and you will probably get views on this board from someone in the UK who has done it this way.

Anz - I rather madly bought sight unseen, after reading this FAQ http://allearsnet.com/acc/dvc.htm and although I haven't even visited my home resorts yet, I haven't regretted a minute of it. Used points for DLP and have also rented some out that I couldn't use.

I bought my original OKW contract via resale from Shontell who now runs one of the companies mentioned in the link I've given you. I then bought an add-on at BCV direct from Disney. Buying direct is really, almost too easy , buying resale involves a little bit more work (not too much) but is well worth it for the savings and the fact that you can buy at the resort you want, not just SSR.

If you do the tour, don't worry. I've never yet heard anyone say that the sales people were pushy.

I'm another one who bought sight-unseen. I'd read up everything I could find about DVC, asked loads of questions on the DIS DVC boards (and got some very, very helpful answers ) and then did everything by telephone with our DVC guide.

As Bexx says, it's so easy to buy through DVC. Our guide always called us straight back, was happy to spend however long it took answering our questions, and was never at all pushy - but then we were pretty much a pushover by that stage!

I have to say I found the printed information which DVC will send you (fill out the request on the DVC website) the most helpful, as I could spend as long as I liked checking out permutations and figures. It may be an idea to try to get hold of this before you head out to WDW so that you've got some idea of what's involved before taking the tour.

When I sent off for some info a couple of years ago, all I got was the video. It's typically Disney slick, but pretty much useless as far as helpful information is concerned! If you want to request any DVC information, try to make sure you get the written stuff as well.

Now that you've mentioned this, I seem to remember that I received my written information from my guide, not from applying via the website.

It might be better to ring DVC and ask to be put in touch with a guide (or I'd be very happy to give you details of my guide if you want to PM me) and then ask for the information pack.

Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for your replies - I've found them very helpful. Hubby's not 100% swayed on the idea altho I am - it makes sense the amount of time we have been spending and will be spending at WDW in the future and from what I've read, it'll pretty much pay for itself I shall try and get some info as suggested and will show it to hubby. I'm sure once we've done the tour and read the info that he'll come round a bit more. Again, many thanks for your help.

Hi Anz, we went in 1999 for our 1st visit and due to budget thought it would be our last for a while, however we popped in to a dvc kiosk , not at all pushy we were taken around boardwalk by the wonderful Mayra Ramirez, talked to her for about an hour re cost effectiveness etc, she sent us off to lunch on her to think about it and invited us back to see her if we were interested, we sure were, we went back the same day joined up with 150 pts which gets us around 10 days every year in OKW or you can go other places, save points etc, for example the year before last we went to Boardwalk in a 1 bed for a week then moved over to wilderness lodge for a week , this year we are doing boardwalk studio 1 week and disney cruise 1 week. we would never have been able to afford this other wise, we left a deposit of around £1000 and got disney finance for the rest, we have already had our moneys worth and another 40 years of hols to look forward too, you can rent out your points if you're not using, sell them or lend them to family, you're not tied to specific weeks or places like other timeshares and the quality of service and accom is outstanding. we sent our parents to disney paris last year with spare points and just paid the flights. you;ll find more info at www.disneyvacationclub.com

Traycie, thanks for your comments. This sounds so good. I'm off to do some more reading and print some stuff out for hubby. He's agreed to take the tour while we're on holiday so who knows, I may come home with an even bigger grin and several thousand pounds lighter
