I am considering a thanksgiving trip in 2017. I recently became familiar with renting DVC points through Davids. I know Thanksgiving is a hectic time, and I'm curious as to how successful I would be renting points for a thur-sunday stay? What's the furthest in advance I can reserve?

You can book 11 months in advanced, if David's has a member that is renting points at that time. So that means you can book Dec of 2016 for a trip in Nov of 2017.

You will be fine if you decide what resort you want to stay at and then book it 11 months before your check in date. That is the soonest you can book a DVC room. The 11 month booking period is for owners to book at their home resort. At the 7 month mark any DVC owner can book at any DVC resort so the chances of getting exactly what you want will not be as good. There are certain rooms and categories that you will need to have your owner lined up ahead of time and ready to book right as the bell rings for the 11 month mark.

If you will be going through David's, you have to get on their request list BEFORE the 11 month mark. That way when the 11 month window opens up, a member will be all ready to make your reservation, and you will be at the top of the list of all the other people who also want that reservation.

Studios and two bedrooms are typically harder to get than one bedrooms. That would be a good reason alone to be ready at the 11 month mark. ....(edited to remove specific info).........at each resort there are certain categories that make it imperative to be ready at the 11 month mark (BWV standard and BWV boardwalk view, AKV Jambo standard view, etc.............AKV Kidani will offer the most availability because it is a bigger resort, so if you're not picky between Jambo and Kidani, keep that in mind.

This doesn't mean you can't get something at the 7 month mark. This upcoming Thanksgiving I switched at the 7 month mark from a two bedroom AKV standard (which opened it up for someone else) to a two bedroom BWV standard view (another hard room to get). However, since you know ahead of time when you are going to be traveling, why not do the booking at 11 months out. Well, there is one reason not to book at 11 months.....non refundable reservations.

If your start date is Thanksgiving day, then be aware that even if you can book through a member exactly 11 months out from date of arrival, you have a high risk of not being to get AKV value or club level rooms, VGF studios, and a probable risk of not being able to get BLT standard view or BWV standard or boardwalk view studios and 2BRs. Those are rooms that have a risk of disappearing many times of the year at 11 months out and what can happen at Thanksgiving time is those with a start date shortly before Thanksgiving Day can fill those rooms for Thanksgiving and the day after by booking several nights, with the result that anyone with a start date of Thanksgivng can be blocked out even before their particular 11 month window opens. In other words, with a Thanksgiving start date, you are on the tail end of most of the crowd that will be booking time during Thanksgiving week at 11 months out. Also even for other near park resort rooms, it will be important to find a member who can book 11 months out or close to it. That might occurr through David's but he can face the issue of not having many members willing to rent at 11 months out for Thanksgiving. If you want AKV savanna or standard view, you will likely have time quite a bit past the 11 month window to reserve, SSR could even be open at 7 months as is true of much of OKW (but not likely studios). Also, if seeking a 1BR chances are good that you can even get near park resorts a ways into the 11 month window and some possibility at 7 months out.
