I have found a deal and wanted to see if anyone thought it was to good to be true. I have found someone to rent me a saratoga springs DVC for less than $2000 the week of 12/17-12/24. I have been reading but am very apprehensive. Any advice on how to research the person.
that's about $8 per pt, not impossible...but the fact that is a high demand period and exactly a week long suggests that it might be an RCI exchange rental.
if RCI catches someone renting an exchange, it's a violation of policy and they may revoke the person's membership...leaving the renter with nothing.
you can often tell if it's an exchange rental as exchangers are charged a $95 fee on arrival, and that fee is often disclosed up front.
i guess it was a bust the person is not emailing me back now. And I got it from sellmytimesharenow. I think its 2 br because we have 6 people also it was flat rent not per point

A 2 BR @ SSR for those dates requires 253 points, but you should try either the Rent/Trade Boards here, or one of the companies here - David's (he has a thread/ad on the Rent/Trade Board) or the Timeshare Store. Prices per point range from $10-13 (private vs. company rental). So a reasonable (and safe sounding) price would be around $2500 to $3300. Owners needing to use points before they expire might drop to $8 (which would be $2024), but $10 is more the ballpark.
I would stay away from ebay, craigslist and things like sellmytimesharenow.com.
Read the stickies at the top of the Rent/Trade board here.
Hard to say whether this is legit or not. It *could* be an SSR owner listing through them. It could be an RCI exchange. If it is an SSR owner, they are uninformed (or they wouldn't use SMTN in the first place---they are an upfront fee company) and could be charging a bit below market, either through ignorance or desperation.
Ask them if "a guest certificate is required". If not, it is probably okay. If so, it is an RCI exchange and you should run, not walk, in the other direction.
Ultimately it depends on your risk tolerance. For not too much more money, you can rent through a more legitimate channel.
