DVC salesmen in the park

My husband and I are WDW vets and we have our first DVC contract in ROFR right now.

We are at Disney now and were walking through Epcot last night. We are friendly and say hello to the CMs and we said hello to one of the DVC salesmen. He started a convo with my husband about football because my husband was wearing an NFL shirt. I thought nothing of it because we've chatted with DVC reps in the past and they were friendly and never even tried pitching a sale.

But last night this guy did try. He talked about it and then tried to get us to book a tour. I know better than to mention to the rep that we are already buying resale so I didn't say a word and told him we'd think about it.

I was surprised this guy was so forward. It makes me wonder if they need to start selling.

He was probably an ASA, advance sales associate, not an agent (guide). His job is to set up tours for qualified prospects. If you tour and buy, he makes more money, so he tries to refer as many as possible. As in life, some will be more aggressive than others.

The ASA's have to be a little more forward as Bill stated. They work on commission as well.

Why wouldn't you tell him that you were in the process of purchasing resale? It isn't like they were going to kick you out of the park.

One of those guys started us on our journey to own DVC.

In fact, we make it a point to stop and say Hi. We talk about different things like sports, the weather and the crowds. I've never come across one that isn't as nice as the other Cast Members in the park.

I know they wouldn't kick us out of the park but they would try to talk us out of resale and into direct and I didn't want to hear the spiel.

Just tell him you're already a member. You don't have to say anything about resale.

Note that you initiated contact. I don't think they're allowed to be too "forward" unless you start the conversation.
Exactly, I don't think I've ever had any of them initiate contact. I've said hello, or something first.

One may have said "Happy Anniversary," on our last trip. But my husband and I were wearing buttons.

That's understandable, but a good salesperson would recognize you as someone who bought once and may be interested in an add-on at some point down the road. If I'm the sales guy I'd be welcoming you to DVC and offering to be of assistance anytime in the future.

Yeah but that will open an entire thread of discussion:
  • Great! Welcome home. Where is your home?
  • How long have you owned?
  • Favorite place you've visited on points?
  • Who is traveling with you on this visit?
  • Ready for more points?
  • Ready for a 2nd (3rd/4th/Nth) home resort? Have you considered Poly? Aulani? Copper Creek?
  • Have you seen the new model units? Not on this trip? How about we set some time aside for you ...
G-r-e-a-t. A whole long conversation about DVC ... ;)

Haha, last time one of the DVC park people tried to talk to us and we told him that we were already members...his reply was simply "welcome home"! This was at the DLH though.

Hmm, mebbe it was just minutes before his scheduled break time? We often find the CMs manning DVC kiosks at DLR pretty starved for conversation with a "live member." Seems we remain a bit unique out here ...

Could be true but if your job is to find qualified buyers and an existing owner wants to take up your time, an owner who just wants to chat, I can see why all you would get is a "welcome home".

We have to remember that many CM's are at Disney just to work and collect a paycheck. Many know less than we do about Disney and the DVC. Some will tell you that they are so busy, they don't have time to even check the DIS. :disrocks:

the only time I actually talked to one of the DVC CMs was at DAK by the starbucks/restrooms. DW was getting coffee and my DD(3) was running around on the planter things. The CM offered to take a picture of us with my phone -- which was nice. I talked to her a little bit, but mentioned I already owned and DW would kill me if I bought anymore.

Us too.

Unless we start a conversation.

It really isn't that difficult to just walk away if someone is trying to take up all of your time.

I actually feel sorry for them, people run from them like the plague.

I've actually never seen people run from them but maybe that's because most of the ones I've encountered are passing out stickers?

Don't. They can do quite well financially for their efforts, like most commissioned jobs....

And people run from them (figuratively), that should be okay, because they do well financially?

Sorry, I guess I was taught to treat people like I wanted to be treated. I don't distinguish between those that "do quite well" verses those that don't.

I wasn't trying to be disrespectful.

My DD worked as an intern for DVC. I, too, felt sorry for the ASA's until I realized that rejection/rudeness is part of the job, all sales jobs for that matter, but that they understood that, and the financial rewards (the reason we all work for a living) can be substantial if they are good at what they do.
