DVC & Retirement

Any retired DVC owners staying at DVC for significant amounts of time (6 weeks at a time or more)? Any non-retired DVC owners planning on doing this? Anybody using or planning on using DVC for wintering in Florida?

I definitely plan on using DVC for a month of retirement enjoyment each year. I will use the Boardwalk as a base and do some traveling around Florida for the month of January.

I can't wait!! Unfortunately, it's about 25 years away!

That's me - - sort of.

I don't like to stay in one place for a really long time, so I bounce around from resort to resort. Stayed in Florida from Dec 3 thru Feb 22. That included 29 days at various DVC resorts, 35 days at other area timeshares, and the rest at relatives or at the beach.

BTW, while walking around OKW around Jan 14th or so, I saw a car with a parking pass that had a check-out date of Mar 31!

For the past few years, I have been spending approximately 4 weeks in the Jan/Feb timeframe at WDW. (Just made my ressies for Jan 08!) It's great, but I'm always glad to get home--I hate missing a good nor'easter. (They're good for the soul!)

I also visit for a week or more in May, Oct, and Dec.

I retired very early in life and truly appreciate the time I can spend at WDW, thanks to DVC.

I was buying DVC arround the same time....and was checking out the spa at SSR and talked to a retired gentleman who was there for at least month or more. I may have to recheck my retirement calculator to account for more money that would be needed for annual dues.....now I probably will have to work longer

don't forget the transportation, tickets and food. Why do you think I am still working....

My DH and I are considering this when the time comes. . .maybe a week in each of the resorts we own. Hopefully it will be several by then!

Do you retirees stay in studios or 1BR?

That is our plan, too. But we'd probably split the time between several trips during the winter. It's too long to be away from the pets for a month at a time. I will likely retire long before the cats are gone...

Even if you are retired, you generally get into a routine, at home; we are using the DVC for our regularly scheduled vacations. (Generally two trips at five/six days apiece; one in May, one in December) And even if you are retired, you still need vacations.

The cats! That's the only thing that would prevent us. I'd love to go to WDW for a month in the late spring and HHI for at least a month in the fall. But the only problem is if we still have cats (who knows, it's probably another 8-10 years). Otherwise, it's definitely what I'm considering.

We are both retired and have enough points to do a BW view 1 bedroom for about 5 weeks during January (a really good time to escape Minnesota). We have considered it. But for now we get more enjoyment out of spreading out our vacations and bringing guests. It gives us something to look forward to several times during the year. And we also don't have to leave DM and DDog for an extended period.

Good Question. I've thought about spending time at WDW when I retire and wondered about how many retirees do spend time there during the winter.
Seems like a very special time at WDW.

Do you still try to split your trips to go more than once a year? Or prefer to stay longer lengths of time?

These threads have come up from time to time over the years and I enjoy reading about the plans others have that are similar to ours.

I couldn't be more pleased to report that there is just one more month to April 4, 2007, when I'll be able to retire. Though I plan to stay until January 6, 2008, when my DW will be able to retire. We work for the same employer.

Wintering at OKW has been our plan since 1995 when we purchased our first master contract. We've purchased several add-ons as well as resales since then bringing us to our current ownership of 1675 points, all at OKW. With these we can stay in a one bedroom villa for 9 weeks, from mid December through mid February. Though our goal is 3000 points which will allow us to stay for the months of November, December, January and February. For this long a stay we'll drive rather than fly and may very well decide to stay a week at HH on the way to WDW then again for another week on the way back home.

We thought our German Shepherd (11 months old, 80 lbs.) would force us to rethink our plans but as it works out our nephew who lives in Orlando, has agreed to take the dog for us while we're at OKW. Very generous of him indeed...just ask my DW.

Looking forward I believe our first extended stay of 4 months will be early November 2010 through late February 2011. The gap between our retirement date and the start of our extended stays is to allow us the time necessary to build our dream house in the lakes region of New Hampshire.

We're both still younger than 50 so we fully expect to be at OKW when whatever happens - happens in 2042.

My retirement plan goes something like this: 5 nights VB, 5 nights HH (yes I want to try it in January!!) followed by 12 nights at OKW in a 1 bedroom. This is my 'points conservation plan' and I'm sure I don't need to explain it here We've always liked to see other places though, so the odd weekend at Boca, St Augustine or Mount Dora for instance is quite appealing.

Although I've notched up at least 50 Florida visits over the last 20 years, this year was my first time in January/early Feb.

At 7.20 am on Sunday morning, about 6 of us were waiting at the shop at HH, OKW for the New York Times to arrive and I noticed we were all ...... of a certain age . We struck up conversations and the others all seemed to be regular visitors at that time of the year - as I hope to be eventually when DH retires

Like others here though, I have 2 cats - now age 14 - who I should hate to leave for as long as a month, so we shall just have to see how things work out.

I am just a little over two years from retirement ( I had a counter in my signature but was told my signature was too many lines so I had to remove that one ). Now that you can use DVC points at FW we will have enough points to stay there over six weeks, even in premiere season.

I can retire in 3 years and have enough points to go and stay at OKW for 7 weeks a year. I wouldn't do that because I'd rather take 4 trips a year for 12 nights each and space it out. Of course, if they ever add the CRV, I would be buying more points. I think I would rather spend my summers here at home in WV where it's cooler and not crowded than in WDW. Spring, Winter and Fall are when I like to visit.
