Maybe they will start handing these out at the Mexican pavillion in Epcot jsut to keep everyone safe! :rotfl:

Well, the schools 10 miles to the West of us are closed for the rest of the week...there were 3 or 4 confirmed cases, the schools 13 miles to the North of us are closed until May 11 because of 3 suspected cases. Now, granted the 3 students feeling ill will probably stay home...but what about the the few thousand others that are likely enjoying the water parks, the malls and even Wal-Mart. How does closing the school control the spread of a flu virus at all. Shoot, the Lions club is having a big carnival here, San Antonio just finished up Fiesta festivities. Their attempts at actually controlling the spread of the virus seem very lax, at best.

I can't even get my DH to wear a rain poncho, never mind this! ROFL! :rotfl:

Did you ask this when the 36,000 people in the US were dying from the "basic" flu from January until April?

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/28/regular.flu/index.html

The power of the media. 150 people die in Mexico and we PANIC. 36,000 died over the past 4 months and we never worried because NO ONE reported it!

You were in danger every day of the past four months......

As for taking a plane. I flew every week during flu season. I fly almost every week during the year..... I have had one cold over the past six months or so....

(but since I might be there next week EVERYONE should stay home. I am sure that flu is deadly. I will risk it for all of you LOL!)

Well, they maybe are worried because this swine flue affects to the healthy poblation, YES, just like the Spanish flu of 1918:

"Most of its victims were healthy young adults, in contrast to most influenza outbreaks which predominantly affect juvenile, elderly, or otherwise weakened patients."

And that is a reason to worry about it, but more than anything to prevent and be careful.

Here's the thing. I agree that on the current scale it isn't too scary and not many people are infected. Going forward this strain can mutate quickly and become deadly (according to CDC it is mutating and becoming more deadly in the US, check out the CDC website if you don't believe me). It's not much of a leap to see it infect 10% of the population (30 million) and kill 1% of it which would result in 300,000 fatalities. So in that case it would be a big deal. And that is why the CDC and the WHO are taking this so seriously. It can quickly become very deadly and very serious if precautions are not taken.

It isn't the healthy people who should be taking the precautions....It's those who are sick! If folks who are sick would just stay home and get well before going out into the public, there would be a greatly reduced transmission of ANY comunicable disease.

For those who are sick....stay away from others, cover your cough, wash your hands and see a doctor. For those who are healthy, wash your hands long and often. Simple. It isn't the well people who should be wearing masks....it's the sick ones who should do that!

YES!!!!

But, what if those sick ppl, do not take precautions? what if they don´t wear masks? or what if they look healthy but have the flu and be able to pass it to "healthy people", remember that sometimes viruses take some time (even days) to show symptoms.

There is when WE, healthy people must take precautions, and even wear a mask. :hippie: :hippie: :hippie:

And I feel sorry for you if you actually believe that statement. I saw many people with the flu over the last 8 years who were young and healthy. Influenza IS NOT an opportunitic infection. VRE,Mrsa, and Cdiff are. It can effect others who have a compromised immune system yes, but that is not the primary way it is contracted, that is how it is spread. Most of my patient's come in the hospital with it, not contracting while in the hospital. And the only way I know this is that now, thanks to medicare, we screen EVERYONE who has the symptoms when they come in the door. Otherwise Medicare won't pay since you wouldn't be able to prove they came in with it and that we didn't give it to them. If the worker in the hospital (including doctors, nurses, lab techs, etc) do not use good hand washing, then it CAN spread to those who are immunocompromised. Now, I am all for people cancelling travel to Mexico, since they do not have the best medical care there or clean water, but I swear the media feeds off of people. We should be preventing the spread of disease EVERYDAY, not when a non medical person with a microphone tells us to. No wonder they are so rich.

I leave for DL on Sunday too... I am just washing my hands and being careful like I always do. I just wish most people would use the common sense too, about staying home when they don't feel good. AND washing their hands. I almost hate to shake peoples hands anymore.... I don't want to ask.... did you wash your hands after you coughed in them and scratched your nose??:rotfl:

Good grief.

So you are going to hide in your home in case it does mutate? And I did go to the CDC website. Where did you get the 30 million and 300,000 numbers? I don't see them on there! (I also don't see big alerts on mutation, but..... )

I have friends who WORK for the CDC. Guess where they are RIGHT NOW????

AT DISNEY!

(and they are fairly high up there. My boyfriend worked there for years. He tried to call them yesterday to see how things were going and was told "they went to a conference in Orlando and are staying this weekend to go to the amusement parks" )

As they always say "The CDC gets funding by crisis"........ It's the job of the CDC to "paint the worst case" Kind of like the job of the State Dept is to "paint the worst case" (Don't believe me, go read the "travel advisory" section. Based on that you would never leave the US every place in the world is dangerous. As if the US is the "safety" capital of the world? :confused3 Gee, my local news this morning had two fatal shootings and two attempted kidnaps of women at a bus stop!)

My boyfriend who is "fairly young" and VERY healthy got the flu last year. The current strains DO NOT DISCRMINATE. They attack "young and healthy" As in any illness however, "young and healthy" have a much better time recovering then "old and ill" (I work in the nursing home industry, the "basic" flu has always been deadly for us) In truth reporting of illnesses is biased because "young and healthy" often just "tough it out" and don't even bother to go a doctor.

I am listening to Good Morning America. It's hysterical..... Even they are admitting those "masks" aren't going to do a DANG thing. Especially the "Home Depot" version.

EXACTLY! I saw a woman wearing one of them yesterday, and it made me laugh. Now if SHE had been sick I could see it, but she was walking around shopping.

I am with CarolA! Very well said. 1st it was MRSA, Bird Flu, and now swine flu.

And anyone want to bet that the school closings going on will result in "I am going to Disney World"? (Or even "I am going to visit the folks in Mexico" if it's a border town?) Kind of like when the IDIOT Govenor of Georgia closed schools to "save gas" Lots of folks I know took advantage of the 4 day weekend to "travel" LOL!

I"m so aggravated, I leave for Disney on sunday and today I have a sore throat and congestion. does anyone recommend anything in particular to shorten colds? I've never taken anything besides vitamins.

Actually I'm heading to Disney in about 9 hours.

I didn't say people should freak out. All I was pointing out is the potential that this virus has and why our health care overseers are concerned. If it was just the media saying it I would totally not worry, but in this case it's the CDC and the WHO who are putting the warnings out there. That alone is a reason to take notice that this has the potential to become very deadly.

This is in the early stages and how it pans out nobody knows. Just be aware of it and take precautions, like the CDC says.

Yep,mix a couple teaspoons of ground cinnamon with a tablespoon of honey and take it 3 times a day. You can mix it in water if that makes it easier to take. I put mine on my oatmeal in the morning.

If you have a fever though, PLEASE DO NOT GET ON THE PLANE!

I'm kinda hoping any school closing here doesn't happen until week after next since we're planning on taking DS out of school for our trip anyway. ;)

Zicam.

I swear it works, but I have no idea why.

I would imagine people are cancelling DVC reservations in early June. Several nearby school districts are closed, several will be closed until the 11th of May. We normally get out of school here at the end of May...so all those kids will need to make up two weeks, cutting into the normal Texas vacation times of Early June..

And by then this will be over and there will be new posts called "I am just going to take my kid out of school because the school system is run by idiots" ;)

Yes, but if you read well, that statement says:

"most influenza outbreaks which predominantly affect juvenile, elderly, or otherwise weakened patients."

There is a difference between saying "it affects predominantly", and saying "it affects only".

Zicam.

I swear it works, but I have no idea why.

I never believed in this type of medicine, but with DH's work (speaking) one time when he felt he was coming down with something a couple of days before a speaking engagement, he started using Zicam. It worked!
If it was just that one time, I would say that it was just a fluke but he has used it several times since that first time and it has worked each time.
