Ok we are all set for our DLR vaca at the end of the week (5/2 - 5/7) and then we've got this swine flu thing going around. Currently the airlines are offering a change at no fee for flying to/from/through Mexico. If the airlines decide to say that they will also do this for travel to/from/through states that have affected people, what do you think DVC will do? Do you think they would make exceptions for those booked at DLR? I know the whole Holding account thing (our UY is October, so we would have to book again at DLR before this Oct 1st, right?).

Anyone have any thoughts?
:confused3

Hmmmm......going to S. Cal myself in early May. Unless they start wholesale closing of schools & public places, I'm going.

I don't think airline change fee policy would affect DVC cancellation policies. If the CDC issued a travel warning to/from states or counties with confirmed cases, then I'm sure DVC would work with members.

I live in the TX county that has 3 confirmed cases, though the town is 10 miles away. Our schools are open, but we are in a different district than that town. All schools in that town's district are closed for the week. If they place a travel restriction or advisory on our county, then I may consider cancelling our June trip to WDW. Otherwise, we are going to drive like usual.

I live in So.California, not too far from Disneyland and there have been no cases of Swine Flu reported here. DW and I are both teachers and we haven't heard of any cases in our district. I believe the California cases are currently only in Northern California. Of course, that could change quickly.

A total of seven swine flu cases have been reported so far in California, ... Four cases were reported in San Diego County and three in Imperial County

Unless I had someone with a compromised immune system or heart problems I wouldn't cancel my vacation. As long as you take pre-cautions you should be fine.

We're planning to go to WDW May 2nd to 8th and are also having reservations about traveling with the kids DS2 and DD4. Taking a plane is our big concern but we live about 19 hours away and I don't think I want to make the drive.

Did you ask this when the 36,000 people in the US were dying from the "basic" flu from January until April?

The power of the media. 150 people die in Mexico and we PANIC. 36,000 died over the past 4 months and we never worried because NO ONE reported it!

You were in danger every day of the past four months......

As for taking a plane. I flew every week during flu season. I fly almost every week during the year..... I have had one cold over the past six months or so....

(but since I might be there next week EVERYONE should stay home. I am sure that flu is deadly. I will risk it for all of you LOL!)

At least one of our little ones gets sick every time we travel so yes, we are a little more concerned this time around. My DD just turned 4 and she's been to WDW 9 times so missing one trip won't hurt. I think as a parent it's at least something to consider.

I with CarolA here, I just can not believe all the hype over the Swine Flu! My goodness there are outbreaks of different strains of flu all the time. I leave for Disneyland this Saturday and I am going to take my "normal" precautions. I make sure I wash my hands well and I'll use antibacterial gel and go on with my vacation.

I don't think people should simply disregard the threat. However, I am not saying that you should cancel your vacation because of the swine flu. There are precautions that can be taken to help prevent getting it. Follow the precautions, and I believe you will be fine. As of today, most people with the Swine Flu in the US have recovered in record time. Does that mean everyone will? NO.

Media frenzy and panic by the general population will cause more problems then the actual pig flu.

exactly!!!

I swear. I am an ICU nurse and have seen people die of just about every thing and the media just causes people to worry about things that are such a small percentage that can kill you. MRSA, VRE, Cdiff, these things you are exposed to EVERY DAY and if you have a compromised immune system and propone to getting sick easily, these can kill you just as quick. Regular flu is a risk and they even have a vaccine for that, which usually does nothing because the one that usually attacks is the wrong strain. If people are going to start cancelling vacations, that is certainly your choice. But you might as well get a bubble suit because every time you go outside your house you are taking a health risk. The number one way to protect yourself from catching most infections is hand washing.

It isn't the healthy people who should be taking the precautions....It's those who are sick! If folks who are sick would just stay home and get well before going out into the public, there would be a greatly reduced transmission of ANY comunicable disease.

For those who are sick....stay away from others, cover your cough, wash your hands and see a doctor. For those who are healthy, wash your hands long and often. Simple. It isn't the well people who should be wearing masks....it's the sick ones who should do that!

Amen! I hate it when sick people come to work and sneeze all over stuff. Bleech.

I have a trip planned to San Diego and Disneyland in August and I have no plans to cancel. Same for my WDW vacations in October and December. It will take a lot more than a flu bug to make me cancel any Disney trip.

Well, the schools 10 miles to the West of us are closed for the rest of the week...there were 3 or 4 confirmed cases, the schools 13 miles to the North of us are closed until May 11 because of 3 suspected cases. Now, granted the 3 students feeling ill will probably stay home...but what about the the few thousand others that are likely enjoying the water parks, the malls and even Wal-Mart. How does closing the school control the spread of a flu virus at all. Shoot, the Lions club is having a big carnival here, San Antonio just finished up Fiesta festivities. Their attempts at actually controlling the spread of the virus seem very lax, at best.

But just to be on the safe side...this comfy park wear is now available in stylish Lime Green:

We leave for DLR on Sunday. I've already started the Zicam supplements, early bed times, extra hand washing/antibacterial gel... I would have done this swine flu or not as my kids always seem to get a cold right before we leave for a trip...

During the SARS scare, I flu to Japan on a plane that had just come from China. I actually felt safer in Asia given the extra attention they were paying to traveler health. My only concern was getting some other type of cold/fever while there and getting quarantined in Sacramento on the way back (would much rather have extra days in Tokyo than Sac!)
