DVC Resorts - Points vs Cash system

I was wondering if anyone can more clearly explain the logic behind how only a portion of DVC resort rooms are actually available to rent on DVC points. I understand "that's just how it is". But I don't really "get" it. Is it wrong to think these rooms were specifically built for DVC members ?

Like I get if a resort of fully booked, and there are so many points to go around. And I get that if rooms are left UNbooked, that someone should be able to book it as a hotel room with cash. That all makes sense to me. Not to mention I'm talking about the Beach Club Villas, which are small to begin with.

But for example, we are going in early January. *terribly* busy season I know. We have most of it booked except for the few "nightmare" days. Which are not available. Makes sense. These are the nightmare "marathon" days.

*BUT* if I go through the regular Disney booking site, and book a vacation from Dec 31-Jan 7 ( for example ), I can pick a studio and complete a cash reservation NO PROBLEM.

I know this is "normal", but I don't really understand the system.

I don't know if I can delete a thread... but it seems I found my answer... Still crummy though :)

If it helps, consider that ALL of the rooms are "booked on points." DVD owns a certain number of points at every resort, and every points trade (for Disney Collection/cruises, RCI) gives them more points to "spend" booking rooms.

They then rent those reservations via CRO.

It's not crummy. It's actually critical to the overall system health. DVD owning points helps with unit issues and refurbs, where units may need to be taken out of service. Point trades to DVD allows them revenue to help pay for member benefit trades (i.e., cruises and RCI, which have a cost).

DVC is an economy in its own right.

Just to respond to this - it's only crummy if you feel that it would be more fair for DVC members to be restricted only to having DVC resort stays as their option to use their timeshare. This method allows people to trade out of DVC into the other avenues such as cruises, Disney hotels and RCI to travel to other locations. While many of us believe that is a poor use of points there are a lot who want the options and will use them.

Understand the frustration & disappointment. Hope your waitlist works.

You really need Plan B for Jan 4-6.

It shouldn't be frustrating or crummy once you understand how the system works and why unless you feel they are taking rooms under the table which I don't.
