I am looking into the possibility of buying a DVC resale. I was thinking of buying points at Hilton Head or Vero Beach, because they are cheaper. Is there a disadvantage to buying one of these other than not being able to book 11 months in advance? What are your experienced thoughts?

Usual recommendation is to buy where you plan to stay most. If you're intent is to stay mostly at the WDW resorts and you buy elsewhere, you can sometimes face an issue of not being able to get what you want at 7 months out for a number of times of the year. Also, be aware that the annual maintenance fees at Vero have for many years been the highest of any resort.

Definitely buy where you plan to stay the most -- really where you'd be happy to stay all the time if necessary. I know that we're very cautious about booking before the 7 month window opens, and I know a lot of other WDW DVC members are as well.

Many DVC vets have spent a good bit of time contributing to this thread, and there is a lot of good info scattered throughout. You'll see a number of viewpoints, and certainly less than complete agreement, because that's the way DVC is. There are no no-brainer answers, and conventional wisdom may be common, but unwise for your family.

Good luck.

I would say that if you wouldn't mind staying at SSR every time you want to visit WDW you would probably be OK. If you like a particular resort and would be dissapointed if you couldn't get it- I say buy where you want to stay.

A friend of ours has been a DVC member for several years at Vero. His family never stays there. They always stay at either the Board Walk or the Beach Club. He calls to make his reservations the day the seven-month window opens, and he says he's always gotten what he wanted, give or take a day or two. (A little flexibility might be helpful, he thinks.)

I have to say: that's been our experience, as well. We own at both BCV and BWV, and always wait until seven months out to make our plans, and it's never been an issue. (Though, I have to add, we've always vacationed in the summer, if that has anything to do with it...)
