After hours of reading these posts, I have come to the conclusion that we need to sell our 150 points at VWL and rebuy 190 points since I am not real happy with our current use year anyway. My question is; how does the ROFR with Disney work? Do they give you an answer right away or does it take a long time? Also, does Disney ever do a sort of trade-in program or will they only consider add-ons to what you currently have? Any help, advice, or previous experiences would be appreciated. Thanks

Since you have actually bought real estate, they cannot "trade". I'm not sure why you feel the need to sell and re-buy. This can end up costing you money. Use Year is not important except when you are cancelling a reservation at the last minute at the end of your Use Year.

I would like to change our use year due to the time of year we vacation. I am running into the problem of not having enough points to book a reservation until 1-2 months before we want to go. Of course, if we would stay home for a year we could solve this problem, but that is not realistically going to happen. So now I am faced with paying to rent additional points to make the reservation or adding on which makes more sense to us. I thought that while I'm doing this I might as well get a use year that works better for us.

Your use year should not prevent you from making reservations until 1 or 2 months before. You can still make reservations at 11 months if the points will be in your account on the dates of your stay, they don't have to be there on your reservation date. For example, if your stay is in June 2004 and you have an April use year, you can make a reservation with April 2004 points now for your home resort. You could even borrow April 2005 points. You don't have to wait until April 2004 to make the reservation. It all goes by the dates of your stay.

Here is what I'm facing: we want to arrange a large family trip to Hilton Head in July 04. To do this I will need to use 17 leftover from June 03 plus all I receive from June 04 and still need to borrow some that I will receive from June 05. I can book this in December 03 but I will not be able to borrow from june 05 at that time. Will I? I know we need to buy additional points for future trips that I want to take as well as this one, but I thought that since we would take large family trips in the summer, by changing our use year it would prevent this from happening again. What do you think, does this make sense?

Yes you can borrow your 2005 points in December of 2003 to make that reservation. That isn't the problem that I see. The problem you may have is booking at Hilton Head for July at the 7 month window.

The least expensive thing to do is just add on more points. Don't sell what you presently have and then re-buy. It has been already said but it is worth repeating that the only thing about use year that matters is if you have to cancel your trip you risk losing points.

HBC is absolutely correct. Sellers pay a commission; I don't know what it is but I believe its at least $1000. Buyers pay closing costs of about $450; you would be on the hook for both.

Sounds like you are suffering from lack of points. Add-on or look for a resale. Your use year is only coming into play if you have to cancel a ressie. At any given point in time you have, potentially, last year's, this year's, and next year's points, regardless your use year.

THanks, I've learned something new about this whole process. We will be booking four inn rooms instead of going with the big grand villa. We have several small children and we thought keeping them separate may make napping easier, etc. Does anyone know if that will be a problem in the seven month window? I thought that the inn rooms may be easier to secure than the villas at the later time! Thanks!

Unfortunately, Disney's Hilton Head resort does not have any Inn rooms. They only have the standard studios, one bedroom, two bedrooms, and Grand Villas. I think Vero and Boardwalk are the only two with Inn rooms.

You could, however, book studio rooms if they are available. I just returned from Hilton Head two weeks ago. We rented a GV for a family reunion. There were 10 of us sharing the villa. While we never felt like we were on top of each other, in hindsight, I should have booked seperate rooms. There was a real lack of privacy.

I think your biggest problem will be getting a reservation at 7 months out. HH is a very small resort, but a wonderful place to stay...especially for family reunions. Even if the rooms aren't available, put your name on the wait list! You never know when someone will cancel. I just got "the call" today telling me that my wait list for our Nov. trip to OKW came through. Yippee! Can't wait for the Food & Wine Festival!

Other options may be to trade into another HH facility through II; or rent out your points so you have cash to rent a non-disney place @ HH. :jester:
