So am planning a 2 week solo trip to WDW in the fall and was planning on staying at POFQ for the entire stay. Am hoping they offer the free dining during that period.

Now I'm thinking it would be less expensive to rent points at one of the Villas, but am clueless as to how this works. Is this for the room only or can the dining plan & passes be added? Not interested in Saratoga Springs as this is WAY too spread out for my taste, nor am I interested in AKV, as again, it's pretty far from most of the other parks. Is it worth doing a villa and the free dining plan?

You cannot get the free dining plan while staying on points. You can pay for it. The first thing you might want to do is go read all the stickys at the top of the rent/trade board.

if you want free dining, you have to book directly through disney (and most likely pay rack rate for the room or villa.)

if you book through an individual DVC owner, you can pay them for a pts reservation but you will not get any disney-direct deals like free dining or 40% off or whatever. also, you will not have any cancellation options since you are dealing with an individual unless they specifically offer it. you will only get a reservation for a villa, but you can pay the daily rate for dining (to the member in advance) if you want to add it.

but you can pay the daily rate for dining (to the member in advance) if you want to add it.

And if the person renting the points wants to have the hassle of adding it and making arrangements for paying.

You'll also buy your tickets seperately, not as part of a package. (we use a broker like Undercover Tourist)

Also, DVC books fast. And at this point in the game, for "this fall" - you may not have many options regarding where to stay. The seven month window for non-home resorts is open through nearly the end of October, Food and Wine and MNSSHP are going on, and you may find availability limited.

You'll likely come out ahead renting a studio and getting the DP than paying full price for a moderate and getting free dining but you should run the numbers. BWV will likely be your bet option for standard view if you can get it since you don't want OKW (also spread out), SSR or AKV. AKV studio value would actually be the cheapest overall. I must admit it's an interesting thought process for me since I only travel single when I have a mission such as a professional meeting. I would think it comes down to how much time you'll spend at the resort and in the room as well as which parks you'll spend the majority of your time at and of course, personal preference. Personally if it were I alone I'd likely stay at a hotel in the World village assuming they were cheaper than a moderate, second choice would be a moderate for a discount code and then a value resort.
