Today, we had a long-time DISboard username posting in existing rental threads offering to make reservations based on requests made in those threads. This poster was undercutting the price offered by the DVC Member who started the thread and rather aggressively soliciting these renters (when they should NOT have even been posting in the thread in the first place).
These posts have been removed. Currently, the poster has only posted on the Technical Support/Test board as they do not have enough posts to use 'Conversation' (PM) even though they created their username years ago.
If you are contacted by someone via 'Conversation' (PM) whom you have not initiated contact with (either by posting in their active rental thread or sending them a PM based on their rental thread), PLEASE let CarolMN, Chuck S, or me know via PM or by reporting the PM you received. You can also send an email to admin@wdwinfo.com to let the WMs know about this uninvited contact.
No one should be cold-contacting another poster soliciting a DVC Rental so PLEASE let us know if it happens to you.
This poster may even actually be a DVC Member with honest intention, EXCEPT THAT THEY ARE VIOLATING DIS DVC RENT/TRADE BOARD POLICY and could in fact be a scammer.
We always suggest that potential renters ask for (and review) references, get (and try to verify) address, phone #, get the DVC Member's name as it appears on their DVC deed (deeds can be verified online - links may be found in the DVC Resource Center), and review past posts of the person to get an idea who they might be. If you are not comfortable with answers provided, past posts, refusal to provide a contract, et. - walk away from the rental no matter how good it may seem.
The REQUIRED READING thread pinned at the top of the DVC Rent/Trade Board offers a wealth of information about the rental process for all parties. PLEASE familiarize yourself with that information BEFORE sending an internet stranger any $$$.
The DIS has not had a reported rental scam for a number of years now, but please do not lower your defenses to be the recipient of what seems to be a "good deal". Due diligence is your friend and key to protecting yourself.
Thanks in advance for being cautious with internet DVC rentals ... and thanks for reading!
