DVC rental newbie...need some help please

Our family wants to go to WDW in November 2016 for NJ week. We have 6 in our family, so we would need occupancy for at least 5, since my youngest will be a few months shy of 3yo. I was hoping for a 1br rental so we could have the 2 bathrooms, and a little space for a pack-and-play and a stroller.

Practically everyone on the Disboards tells me that with a larger family, a DVC rental is the best value and is the way to go. My confusion is that no matter how I try this, with tickets and DDP, it is more expensive than a family suite. I just want to know if I'm missing something or doing the math wrong. Are the people that tell me to do DVC making all of their own meals and saving money that way? We as a family prefer to do the DDP, and will make and eat small things in our room, but don't want to cook full meals on vacation.

When you say "Family Suites" do you mean those at All Stars / Art of Animation? If so, those are Value resorts whereas the DVC Villas are at Deluxe resorts, i.e. at opposite ends of the Disney resort spectrum - that would probably account for the price difference

DVC renting will not always be the least expensive option. Also November is a popular month so your choices of what is available might be limited. You really just have to price out what you need. I would imagine most that rent do not do the Dining plan.

With the one bedroom, you will also only get one real bed and the only with 2 bathrooms are Bay Lake Towers and Kidani Village.

DVC is not always the cheapest for a larger family now that they've added family suites to the mix at the value resorts. You've done the numbers so not much to question if you see a difference. The thing is that it is a value resort vs a deluxe so if one does not like the values then the numbers can shift.

Renting is usually cheaper when comparing the rental rate to Disney's rate at the same resort, same room. If you are happy at a non-deluxe resort, you can save more there.

We rented VGF 1 bedroom because we wanted to go deluxe and have a separate bedroom from our kids. I know it sounds snobby, but the accomodations are just nicer. Bigger beds. Better mattresses. The CMs even seem more willing to go out of their way for you at a deluxe resort. In fact, the mattress we had at VGF was so comfortable, we contacted the manufacturer to see if there was a way to purchase the mattress. There is and we are. If you don't mind me asking, what's the price difference in the resorts?

Before I bought my points I wanted to try out a 1 br. in the resort I was thinking of buying. It was the same price for me to do a cash reservation through Disney w/ the discount offered as it would have been to rent the points from a member, so I went w/ Disney. It really depends on the villa you want & how many points it would take and the price of the points v. Disney's discount offers. Studios are almost always cheaper via rental, larger villas it just depends.

Ahh...NJ week! We are looking at a similar situation for our family over NJ Teachers Convention Weekend . DD turns 30 and wants to celebrate in Disney, with new baby, husband and whoever wants to tag along. Haven't been down since 2012, but last trip we opted to rent two studios instead of a one bedroom. It was less points, and we felt it offered us more privacy. Don't know if that would work for you. As far as DDP, do you have a Disney Visa card? You can earn Disney Dollars for everything. That was our free dining last trip. Good luck with your planning. Trying to see if it's possible we can tag along with our DD for her birthday.
