As has been stated earlier, DVC is not for everyone.
We recently bought into BLT and we had our doubts. What our family did was to look at our historic vacation pattern. I had enough information to calculate a estimate of how much we paid for lodging for each trip. I compared this to the cost of DVC for that same timeframe (including maintenance fees). Our conclusion was that DVC would pay for itself in about seven vacations.
The only caution I have is to make sure you buy points to match your vacation pattern. We did not want to over-purchase to the point where we allowed our points to to drastically drive changes to our pattern. You can always purchase more points if needed.
