Personnaly, I would say buy the minimum amount of points it would cost you for the amount of time you think you would stay.
i.e. buy at least 100 pts if you plan to stay in a studio every year at OKW in Sept. -- the lowest point season(this would cost you 80pts for a full week including wknds) or 50 points if you plan on going every other year and want to stay in that same size/Time of yr. in OKW and you could bank points to manage this. Of course if you think you'd want a larger unit up the points for the size and do the same for the time of year you would most likely visit. Also base your point choice amount on how many points it would cost you to stay in the resort you would choose (I just used OKW as an example) BCV's or some of the other DVC's a studio for that same time cost just over 100pts.
While I totally understand you're wanting to pay outright cash for the smaller contracts, it's a great idea only if the amount of points will benefit you. And as already stated you'll need to buy re-sale and there will be closing costs to figure in. If managing by banking and borrowing your points will work for you than go for it. A smaller contract can work well for you if you only plan on visiting every other year or every 3 years but if you will visit every year, you'll want at least enough to cover 1 week a year (or however long you normally stay per year) - It really depends on how often you will visit.
