DVC question

Not sure if this is the right place, but I looked in the DVC section and it seems that only DVC owners post there and I want to ask non-owners. Have you ever rented points and stayed in DVC? What was you experience? It seems that I could get a room-only deal for about half the price with nicer accomodations (other than the no-maid service).

I'm sure this will get moved to "Resorts", but I wanted to post here first because there's so much traffic.

We've rented 3 times, going for our 4th rental trip this Thanksgiving. It's fantastic. I love skipping on housekeeping service and getting an amazing room.

Just know it's addictive...and you'll probably end up buying in. We're planning on buying next year.

As to the original question, this Oct will be our 5th stay at BoardWalk on rented DVC points. We'll have a standard view studio with kitchenette for $116 per night, probably around what Pop Century would cost. We love the whole expereince.

We rented points from three different DVC members for our trip last November (9 of us went so we needed a lot of points). Two of the transactions went smooth, the third one ended up in Banruptcy and I was a nervous wreck for months unsure if we would still have a reservation from that DVC member. Just be caution, you never know how it will turn out. I can recommend the two other members that we used. We actually loved staying at BLT so much, we bought a resale contract this past February.

Renting points is a great thing. Being a DVC member I love to help out people when I can't go.

The rooms you can get for the prices can't be beat in my opinion. I just talked to someone and could give them 3 nights in Animal Kingdom for 396 in total. That is great value in my opinion.

However, you do have to know when you are going since at DVC we cannot get the free dining.

I have friends that only go to disney with free dining. If they ever take away that option renting from a DVC member becomes a no brainer.

Next question.... are there particular villas anyone recommends? We are a family of 4 with 2 small boys that don't care where they sleep so a pull-out sleeper should be fine. With that being said, a studio would be fine. BLT seems awesome (park view), but wow what a price difference!

The main factors are price and convenience/transportation. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere where it's a hike to the bus stop or a 30 min bus trip to the parks. We recently stayed at POR and the bus trips were a little much

Staying at BLT now. If you go to Magic Kingdom as much as we do, I recommend staying here. It is so convenient, and worth the cost.

I have rented points from several different DVC members through the DVC-rent/trade thread here on the DISboards I have had the most positive, magical experiences I do verify ownership just to be an educated consumer I actually like not having someone coming in the room every day The members have added Disney's Magical Express and the dining plan for me without any problem I love being able to stay at a deluxe without the deluxe price tag

Now with that being said, Beach Club and Boardwalk Villas are also very nice and the location is almost as good. Quick little walk to Epcot, boat ride to Hollywood Studios and you can walk thru Epcot to a monorail for Magic Kingdom. Only bus is either downtown or Animal Kingdom.

We usually rent a car, but seem to have it parked most of our vacation when we stay at either Beach Club or Boardwalk.

You could also look at Fort Wilderness Lodge for just a boat ride over to magic kingdom and not pay the Bay Lake Tower price.

I have rented about 6 times, the most recent will be a 3 night stay in June at BLT. I paid HALF of what the cash rate is. I rented twice from a broker, usually they are a little higher per point but I got last minute specials.
I've had great experiences with each rental. I usually do fairly last minute trips (like 30 days in advance or less), and was still able to find something and save money.

There are many of us non-DVC owners on those boards because we are thinking of buying a DVC membership. We are renting points for your trip in a few weeks and ya I wish I had known about it years ago. I am saving 70% over rack rate. You can rent from reputable businesses that rent points as their business too. There are risks involved from renting from an individual. There is a lot of information over on the DVC board about renting points.

I second BCV due to the pool but maybe consider WLV (Wilderness Lodge). You can take the ferry or bus to MK. They have a small kiddie pool and a playground plus the beach.

We rented points last year, through a rental service, not the one associated with dis boards, somewhere cheaper. Very easy transaction, we even got the DDP, and ME. Bought tickets through UT, eveything was perfect! Although I did notice, if you rent privately, it can be cheaper than any service. We rented points 5 times from another DISer. The ease and cost savings were great and I feel like we made a good friend. We "finally" decided to buy our own contract and closed last week. This summer we're staying on our own points.

I recommend renting points to everyone who asks (and many who dont)

I think you mean Villas at Wilderness Lodge. Fort Wilderness is a whole 'nuther resort without a DVC at this point in time.

The thing you have to know about "renting points" from a member is that most members will not offer any cancellation policy. So your trip pretty much has to be set in stone. DVC points expire after a certain amount of time. Plus so many of the resorts get booked up more than seven months out. You can't just wait until the last minute or a few months before and get a BLT one bedroom villa (which probably would be easier than a studio or two bedroom villa, even though the studios at BLT are really, really small).

Our last trip to WDW was in an OKW Grand Villa and we brought our son and eight of his friends down for a graduation trip. This was the first time I ever really spent a lot of time in the villa. There was a day or two when I didn't even go to the parks. I just spent an hour or two at the neighborhood pool close to our villa. The rest I just spent on the porch watching the golfers and reading. So with DVC you may find yourself enjoying your resort and not just using it as a place to recharge after spending all day and night at the theme parks.

And we are staying at BLT in October in a one bedroom villa. Us two old people for nine nights and our college age son and one or two of his friends for a few nights. So BLT isn't only for families with little kids.

I have never rented points, but stayed in a BLT studio 2 years ago. At the time my kids were 3 and 5. The location of BLT is great for MK, but the studio was very small. If you want some adult time after the kids go to bed, it is not possible in a studio. I would recommend a 1 bedroom at the minimum.

A Disney Vacation Club resale is when you buy an existing contract instead of buying your membership through Disney. We got into BLT for 1/2 the price of what Disney would have charged us if we bought direct.

I cannot say enought about BLT...location, location, location. Staying at BLT with small children was the selling point for us to become vacation club members. We could walk to MK or take the monorail. The only time we have to use a bus is for AK and HS. This past March we stayed at BC and loved it there again location was great being able to walk to Epcot and SAB pool was awesome for the kids.
