DH and I are considering sometime in the future, much to my FIL's dismay, investing in the DVC (or as he would say, "We need to talk about your idea of investing")...ANYWAY, we've been chastised by other DVC members when we've cruised for not being members, as they say it could have saved us much money. My question is this: How many points does it take to take a cruise? We are a family of 5...sometimes we travel with the kids, sometimes without. When we go with the kids, we can use 1 room, or 2. We're flexible :earboy2: Sooo, is there a simple answer to the question of how many points? :boat:

We have not found it to econmical at all to use our points towards cruising. They charge an astronomical amount of points, and those point totals increase every year. When we first used points to cruise five years ago, it was great.....very comparable with time on property.....and with meals and entertainment included.

But there is no end in site with the point upward spiral....they can charge as many points "rent" as the market will allow. For example, last February we paid points for 2 adults in a category 9......and it cost us THREE years of points.

in 2005 - For the 4 night cruise, regular season, deluxe family stateroom w/ veranda - it would be 234 points for the 1st 2 adults, 96points age 13+, 89 age 6-12, and 86 points age 3-5

As a DVC member who thinks it is the best major purchase we have ever made, I wouldn't advise it if you only like to cruise. If you visit WDW a minimum of every other year then absolutely. We tend to use up our points at the parks and are taking our first DCL cruise next August and are paying cash. You might want to send in a request for information and they can probably send you point requirements for the various cruises.

I agree! We are DVC members and used points for 1 cruise, and after that we decided it wasn't worth it. We only own 150 points, and we find that using them at WDW or Hilton Head or Vero Beach is a great deal! But not for the cruise.

If you like WDW, you would love DVC! Even the studios are better than regular rooms, but the 1 or 2 bedrooms are WOW!

At one time we had nearly 800 points but have since sold them and are very glad to have done so. There are many advantages to being a DVC member but for us, it just didn't work. Think it over a lot and talk to many people before you invest, and then check out the resale sites for your best deal.

We are useing our DVC points for our 12/4 cruise on the Magic. It cost us 252 points. We have 250 per year to use, so its not too bad. The eastern is a few points cheaper, so really, if the points didnt keep going up every year, we could have taken at cruise every year without borrowing points. Not bad, considering it usually costs about $1700 for us to pay cash.

Actually, the points have just been raised another 20 some points for the same cruise next year, so I doubt I'll be using them towards the cruise any more.

I highly recommend DVC though!! :D

We are using our points also for our 12/4 cruise.

DENNIS...why don't you find the boards for our cruise and join us....

We used our DVC points all the time for going to ORL. We now own a house in ORL and live in Hilton Head...so....our points were just banking. I don't remember how many points we used, but we still have enough left to spend 2 or 3 nights at one of the resorts this winter.

So, our cruise cost us $75.00. Our membership is paid for, so it's well worth it to us.

Yes, it didn't take long either since they were grouped separately - we made out VERY WELL!!! In fact, the profit we got paid for our 2 week trip to Europe this past summer.

Although DVC is great for some, and good for others - we enjoy other types of vacations - for instance, we are leaving for Mexico City next week for 7 days. (Se hable Espanol!) Always a good time to leave Indiana - college football is over and the bowl games haven't started!

Sometimes we use points , sometimes cash, and other times points and cash. It depends on what we are planning, but I would not look at the joining of the DVC as an investment. Many people do look at it in that way and thats fine but it really (to me anyway) is an economical way to enjoy all aspects of Disney and to have the best accommadations, best location, and best time at a pre-paid price for the next 50 years (if you buy at SSR).

If you decide to sell your points in the future you may make some money on the sale and thats great. But, if you love the Magic that you feel when you visit any Disney theme Park, or boarding the ship or whatever, then start buying some points and enjoy!
