Has anyone used DVC Points for an Adventures Trip? If so, did you find it to be a good value for your points?

You will probably hear answers from both sides of the fence. It depends on what you feel comfortable with.

We used DVC points and cash for the Backstage Magic trip and would do it again in a heartbeat that way. We bought our points for the variety of vacations that we could take as a family not to be limited to just the parks. I don't want to get into the hassle of renting points and never even thought about doing that when we purchased them. We've used them for cruises and plan to take another ABD trip as soon as we can safe up some more points!

We used points for Viva Italia because when we bought we got a free years worth of points as an incentive (600 points!). It was a no-brainer. We felt it was like a free vacation. This year we used points for one and paid for the other to take SWS. You will definately get a variety of opinions here. Yes it is not your best use of points, but they are your points to use how you want, so who cares! Many on the DVC boards suggest renting points and then paying for ABD trips with your proceeds but we do not want to go through the hassle.

We were planning on using our points for our 2011 Ireland trip but with the huge point increase(100pts per person) we have decided to pay cash.

We used points to pay for two of us to do one of the Italy excursions. However, it was an inaugural trip and it was on "special" so it wasn't a bad trade-off, especially since at the time we had an abundance of points banked that we had to use. I'm not sure we would use points now since the cost has increased considerably.

I will say this about Disney. Our group was the first to go on this trip, and most of the things we complained about were changed on later tours. They do listen!

I wouldn't hesitate to travel with ABD again. Just not on points the next time!

Rent your points and use the cash for Adventures by Disney. You'll have more options if you need to make any changes.

I would try and rent my DVC points and use the cash to pay for your Adventures by Disney package. You'll have more options if you need to make any changes. Also you don't have to worry about any issues that might arrise using the points.

I used my DVC points for my son & I to go on the Germany ABD trip this Sept. I used Marriott rewards points for my stay in Frankfurt before the trip begins, and I used miles for our plane tickets. The only $$ will be spending money and the post nights I booked. Yea..I guess it is risky about the change aspect, but i would never have gotten to travel internationally if it hadn't been for my DVC points. Can't wait to see how the trip goes!!:cool1:

We plan to use our DVC points for the summer of 2012 to go on the Southwest trip. This way at least two trips will be paid for and we will only need to pay for the other two trips.

My wife and I used our DVCC points to book the Viva Italia trip this past May. For what we got and the memories and experiences we had, I would do it again in a heartbeat.:surfweb:

I am hoping to go on SWS next Aug. If I pay cash I hope to send in $500 a month to bring down the shock at the end. If I find I am short cash towards the end can I change one person to DVC points?
Yes I know it is not the best use of points and i do not want to rent out points

Thanks in advance !!!

I don't know about the DVC points, but if you have a Disney Visa (or want to get one) you can spread your payments out further by using their 6-months no interest financing on any Disney vacation. Spreading the payments over those extra 6 months makes it seem less painful. :)

Just be careful, because they have a $10,000 per transaction limit to that. Any one transaction over $10,000 will not qualify for the 0% financing. So if your ABD is going to be over that amount, try & break it up into multiple transactions to take advantage of the 0% APR.

(It's *really* hidden in the terms. You have to go hunting for it.)

i would agree with the comments about renting your points and using the cash for your trip. you get more for your money - we did that last year and it worked out great

How does this save money? Is it easier to just use the points? Thanks for your help.

Go to the dvc member site and look at the cost per points for the member cruise next year. Most people can rent their points for $10/point. If you do the math, it's less expensive if you use cash. Also you don't have the transaction fees if you want to make any changes.

Go to the DVC rental thread. It's fair easy, however, it does take time. I would suggest using a contract and getting all the $ up front.

It's all what you're comfortable with.

Good luck!

It's definitely *easier* to just use the points. However, there are some issues when using points for an ABD, such as anyone else on your reservation that you are paying cash for, you must pay the full cash amount up front. And if you have to cancel the trip for any reason, there are issues with the status & use of the points after that. (I'm not a DVC owner; I'm just basing this answer on things I've seen other people post here.)

Some people have posted that they feel that using your points for an ABD is not an efficient use of your points, because if you figured out how many $$$ per point you were spending (comparing it to the cash price for the trip) you can probably rent the points for more $$$ per point, therefore not spending as many points for the trip.

Others have stated that they didn't think it was worth the hassle to rent the points, and were fine with just using the points less efficiently. It's really up to you which is more important.

Thank you very much to both of you! If I do sell my DVC points for $10pp, I will save about 800 per person for a trip for 4 to Germany!! That is alot of money to save!!! The points went up alot for 2011 trips! Hopefully ABD will have specials too!

Thanks again for the info :)

It depends, DVC points Generally rent for around $10 per point and if the trip costs a lot of points you might be able to use less points by renting them then by booking them. I personally don't want the hassle of renting points and if I wanted to use DVC points I would just use the points but others have a different view point.

I was very fortunate that I have made friends here on the boards that regularly rent points from DVC members. So when I made up my mind to rent out 1 yrs worth of points (which will pay for all but $500 of my DDs portion of our ABD trip) I went to them first!

They made out and so did I!

I was able to rent 300 points for $10/point rather than having to use 510 points! This way I can use a few borrowed points (66) to pay for DisneyLand Paris.

Regardless of renting/using the points... I couldn't have made this trip without DVC!
