I am thinking about buying and wanted to know if anyone knows what the points values are on none Disney hotels. My wife and I also love going to Mexico and want to how many points that will cost us. Any help?
The number of points for a non-DVC standard hotel room is usually more than a similar villa. For example, a studio will require a whole lot less than a room at the Polynesian. A studio may be slightly less than a room at the POFQ.
With trading out to non-Disney stays, you have to work with MS to get those and some are very difficult to get.
For what it is worth, it is generally thought that you get the best bang for your buck using DVC points for DVC stays.
As Deb said, the points for non-DVC resorts can be very high - and when you consider that what you get is generally worth much less than a dvc unit, then the value becomes almost pitiful. Even staying within Disney - booking a regular room at a moderate resort will cost at least 1/3 more points than a BWV bw view studio...plus you pay a $95 transaction fee. So, for your $150/night moderate room, it costs you 1/3 more than a $400/night studio plus another $95! DVC is a fanastic value if you're staying in dvc resorts. It allows the flexibility of trading out, but you pay dearly for it.
If your trip to Mexico is a one-time thing, and you have the points available then go for it. What the heck if you "blow" points inefficiently at some point. But, if you plan to do that fairly regularly, you're much better off buying a significantly cheaper timeshare.
