DVC points - Disney cruise question

I know using DVC points to pay for a Disney cruise isn't the best use of those points, but regardless, I had a question I was hoping someone could answer.

If you book a future cruise while onboard and don't mention when booking that you want to use points to pay for that cruise, is it possible down the road to apply those points to your reservation? Or can DVC members only use their points for a Disney cruise if they book directly through MS?

They told us you have 3 days from the time you leave the cruise to book using points. If you are set up for $$, you must pay with $$. It never hurts to ask though.

Some have reported being able to convert cash reservations to points for DCL. They essentially coordinate the cancellation and rebooking with DCL. I'd talk to MS if I wanted to do this.
