DVC Newbie! Points Questions/Confirmations

We just returned from a week at the Beach Club and finally took the plunge and joined DVC. When we purchased, we were given a 2016 allotment of our points as a bonus. We are an August Use Year with 65 points. I think I have most of this down, just wanted to confirm a few things timeline wise with you all who have much more knowledge than I!

1. If I bank our 2016 points (by March 2017), they must be used in the use year of August 1 2017- July 31, 2018.

2. If we're looking at possibly a December booking at Aulani, I could book in May 2016 (7 months out) with our banked 2016 points and the 2017 points we'll receive on August 1, 2017.

3. Any unused 2017 points after booking must be banked by March 2018.

4. We must travel no later than July 31, 2018 with our banked 2016 points.

Yes, those dates are correct.

I'd think of "getting" the points a little differently. You have essentially bought all the points until your contract expires and now it's just a matter of when you can access them to use. They are already in your account and aren't really added on any set date. The dates of your reservation just dictate what points you can use for that stay.

Now, just a bit on your purchase, was the August UY one that best fits your travel plans? Having a good UY for you travel can be a form of free travel insurance against last minute cancellations. If you have a good one it will give you plenty of time to reschedule or perhaps to bank points if something comes up that you need to cancel your trip. I'm guessing that you bought PVB as the last I heard they are doing the August UY unless someone asks for something else. All UY's are actually still in their 2016 UY so any of them would have received the current 2016 points. I ask because if your purchase was just last week you could still get a different UY if August actually isn't the best and not all guides will talk about this. It's good to have a UY that starts just before your normal time of travel assuming you have one.

Yes, we did buy PVB. Hmmm very interesting and definitely not something our guide brought up. Off to read through that thread! Thank you!!!!!

You didn't get any bonus points. You only got the points you are entitled to get. With a UY of August, your points are good from Aug 1 to July 31 of the next year. So you currently are in your 2016 UY, not 2017.

BUT, if you really don't want to own at PVB (it's not your slice of Heaven where you won't mind staying if you can't book a non-home resort at seven months out), rescind your purchase now (you have ten days since you signed the contract), learn more about what you bought and then rebuy what you really want. The points will still be there. And read up on resales.

Buying at your favorite resort is important due to the 11 month booking window, booking other resorts at 7 months is becoming increasing difficult. If you need more time to study up on the DVC or want to change home resorts, you may still have time to rescind your contract without penalty. This happens more often that you would think.
