DVC "Moderate" Resort

What is your opinion of a DVC resort in the "Moderate" class?

  • Good idea

  • Bad idea

  • Indifferent (No personal interest, but wouldn't care if DVC did it)

Another point seems to be transportation availability. Deluxe resorts have a boat or monorail option, moderates only have busses for the most part.

POFQ and POR have the same setup as OKW and SSR. Buses everywhere and boats to DTD.

You gonna put queen sized beds in those mods? Bunks instead of doubles or queens?

I'd think the annual dues could even be higher with more community laundry rooms, more maintenance on a greater number of villas, even though they might all be studios. The room footprint would have to be smaller to justify the cost.

Since the point requirement would be less why not double beds instead of queens? You'd be paying less points to stay in the mods than in the deluxes. They don't HAVE to have queen size beds. I know most of the DVC units have a certain model they follow, but this would be an entirely new grouping.

Also, as far as dues... I don't see how more maintenance is required on more studios. In a studio there is less to go broke - the larger units have the full kitchen, W/D and garden tub with jets to worry about.

Yes.... and.....are you saying POFQ and POR are deluxe, or the other way around....

Does SSR have room service? I haven't seen anyone talk about that.....

Well, I guess the cost of purchasing and maintaining a queen size bed is a little more than a double. You make a good point about the garden tub and the extra sink area, that could be eliminated, dishwashers could be eliminated, no washers and dryers... these items would all save cost and space..., there could be no room service, do moderates have bars by the pools? they could go back to the smaller dining table like in BWV and VWL instead of the larger table in BC and SSR (I know OKW's is a nice size), perhaps even leave it at a breakfast bar without a table... Perhaps there's no balconey as another money saver....

One option might be to not have one bedrooms as moderates, but to have connecting studios with studios alternating between queen bed and couch set up and two queen beds to that the connecting studios would have at least three queen size beds and a fold out couch. There are lots of situations where I think that set up could work out fine.

OK idea, but if asked if we would use 5 points for a studio at Carribean Beach before 8 at OKW (or SSR), but would always move up to 12 (or whatever) to be at BCV,VWL or BWV EVERYTIME if available.

Good point, I wouldn't stay in a moderate DVC.

I still like the idea of adjoining studios at the contemporary.

Since it's just the 2 of us, and we stay in a studio anyway, I'd be ALL OVER this!

However, from a financial standpoint (DVC), I doubt it would ever happen.

I would think that the cost to produce a POFQ type resort versus a "typical" DVC resort is probably not that different. Certainly not half (which is what the point cost/day would need to be.) Therefore, I don't think the financial incentive is as great to produce a "moderate" as a typical DVC resort.

Plus, if DVC stays "upscale", people will be more inclined to spend the "premium" since they're getting the premium niceties over and above a "moderate". For example, do you think that, from a purely dollars & cents standpoint, it costs DVC $200 more per night per room for what we get at DVC versus say, All Stars? Same logic - Rolls Royce is the premium auto. But, from a financial standpoint, is it really "worth" (or cost to produce) 10X (or $400,000 more) than say, a Cadillac?

Please don't misunderstand me - my DVC purchase was one of the best things I ever did and would not trade it for anything. But, from a financial standpoint, Disney probably makes twice the profits from renting DVC for cash than from renting a value, or even a moderate for cash.

You know, I voted good idea, but now I want to change my mind and vote bad idea. I'm such a cheapskate, and before we joined DVC we only stayed in Moderate Resorts. Well, all except once-we stayed at WL, but I couldn't enjoy myself because all I kept thinking of is how much I could do with the extra money we'd save by staying at a moderate resort. One thing I love about DVC is that it's finally allowed me to stay in truly deluxe accomodations. Yet, I know myself-if I had a choice to stay in moderate accomodations and save points, I probably would. Then I'd probably not stay at my beloved BCV. Oh, no! The best choice is please-don't build those moderate DVCs. I've been spoiled!

I agree. If I were paying cash I would usually stay in a Moderate Resort. They are cheaper and I actually love them. I've also stayed at Deluxe Resorts but either when they were cheaper (in the 1980's) on w/ an AP rate. But not only am I spoiled but so are my sisters and their children and granchildren. Some of them only want a 1 bedroom!

Bad idea. It would dilute the brand. DVC should be DVC, not DVC and DVC Lite.

If Disney wanted to do this totally separately, under another name, fine. But not as part of DVC.

But! - It's not a bad idea for a non-DVC moderate or value "home away from home" resort. Something on the order of an upgrade to the cabins at FW. It would definitely fit the bill for frugal families of 5 or more who aren't always happy booking 2+ value or moderate rooms. I've long thought the values should have included something like this as an option for larger families - a very basic 1 or 2 bd. setup with a kitchenette.

I think it is a good idea, but probably never will happen, as someone posted, DVC will be a "deluxe" resort area, not moderate.

But lower points, on property, HECK YEAH!!
