DVC merchandise - (buying question)

Hi guys! I was wondering if you have to be a DVC member to buy DVC merchandise. I am asking because a friend of mine is staying at Disney as we speak. She wanted to surprise me and buy the new DVC magic band for me. They asked for her DVC membership card - and when she told them she was buying as a gift, they told her she can’t without a DVC card. I thought I’d ask the professionals if this is indeed the case. Thanks so much!

For most items, you do not need to be a member. The Magic Bands are limited edition, I think. Some people have been hoarding them and selling them on eBay at a huge markup, so they may be rationing them at 1 or 2 per member. Just a guess.

From my experience, there are certain DVC exclusive items that you can only buy if you show proof that you are a DVC member. Those include the DVC exclusive magic bands and DVC exclusive pins. I had to show my member card when I bought the DVC magic band 2 weeks ago.

I've always been asked for my DVC card when buying DVC merchandise at the resorts or pins at Disney Springs.

That may be because you are entitled to a discount.

I've always been asked for a card for limited edition items - like the pins. Some stores have asked for a card when buying a random t-shirt. FWIW, I've also been asked for my AP when buying limited edition Annual Pass pins, or my chase card or D23 membership when buying those items too.
